The European Centre for Medium-Range
Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is a worldwide
leading international organisation that
develops and operates global models to predict
the behaviour of the atmosphere.
Every day, its powerful computing systems
assimilate in near real-time over 12 millions of
observation data from about 60 satellites and
from various ground networks.

Where are the jellyfish?
Facts:
• In the Mediterranean region, 150 000 people
are treated for jellyfish stings each year
• In 2013, jelly fish blocked
a cooling water intake, prompting a Swedish
nuclear reactor to shutdown
• In 2007, jellyfish wiped out a salmon farm in
Northern Ireland killing 100 000 fish
Sentinel-3 is primarily an ocean mission that will
provide accurate and reliable measurements on:
• Sea-surface temperature
• Ocean colour
• Sea-surface height
• Ocean currents

R&E Support For ESA COPERNICUS
• R&E users are a significant target audience
• Tend to be regular, high-volume data consumers
• Are already served by a dedicated network infrastructure
“How Best to disseminate to R&E users
over the R&E networks?”
• The European R&E networking community is represented by GÉANT
• GÉANT maintains links to worldwide R&E networks
 Implement COPERNICUS dissemination via GÉANT

Case study: EUMETSAT
• EUMETSAT is the European operational satellite agency for monitoring weather,
climate and the environment.
• Operate a system of meteorological satellites that observe the atmosphere and
ocean and land surfaces – 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
• This data is supplied to the National Meteorological Services of the organisation's
Member and Cooperating States in Europe, as well as other users worldwide (USA,
Korea, Africa).

26
EUMETSAT Dissemination
• EUMETCAST
• Near-Real-Time data stream
• Via encrypted DVB-S2 broadcast to subscribers
• Challenge: Future years satellite NRT will begin to exceed available data rate
• Demonstration service with GÉANT,
network-based complement to EUMETCAST
• Leverages R&E network bandwidth and stability
• Designed to maintain the key EUMETCAST concepts
• Delivery as one-to-many-point PUSH streams, instead of user-initiated file
download
• The same subscriber channels and product categorisations
• Maps well to existing data processing and delivery chain

EUMETCast Terrestrial Footprint Overview
• Accessibility mainly within Europe to all Member States
• Prerequisite to accessibility is: eligibility to access the dissemination via
NREN
• Currently 8 sites are registered with the multicast stream and receive data
in near real-time in Europe and 3 sites overseas.
• Outreach to Asia - Korea
(KMA) via cooperation
between GEANT and our
Asian partner networks
• Outreach to USA (NOAA)
via cooperation - GEANT
and Internet2
• Outreach to Australia (NCI)
via cooperation GEANTTEIN and Asia-Pacific
partner networks
• Feasibility of outreach to
selected organisations
located in Africa planned
for 2016
