Alternate Assignment- IRP Speech Worth: 20 points in the assessment category. Ms. Heath, the written paper is 100 points. Does this mean I get a zero on the paper? Not at all. You will be exempted from the paper, so it will have no effect on your grade. (Likewise, those who do the paper, will be exempted from the speech.) Length: 3 minutes. Ms. Heath, what if it’s shorter or longer than 3 minutes? If it’s longer, please keep it under 4 minutes. If it’s shorter, you will lose points. Practice your speech and time it. Content: Like the paper, you are making an argument about which version of the text is better- the book or the movie. Make sure you are explaining why you think what you do. While you can certainly talk about pieces from the book and movie, it shouldn’t be so much a summary as it is an argument over which you find to be the superior text. Can I give away spoilers? Yes, you can. If another student really wants to read that book or watch that movie, they can talk to me about it. Your speech should sound polished and rehearsed. Practice your speech several times, as we tend to speed up our dialogue when we are nervous. I know it’s hard, but you need to have your head up and be speaking directly to the class. But, can I bring something up with me so I don’t forget anything? Of course! Feel free to bring up index cards or notes or whatever you need to get through your speech successfully. But…Ms. Heath, I REALLY hate speaking in front of people. Like, really reaaaaaaally hate speaking in front of my peers. I hear you. The only way you will overcome this fear is by doing the very same thing you are scared of! I used to get so nauseous when I had to present in front of the class…and now I’m a teacher and do it every day! That being said. For this assignment, feel free to record yourself and then upload the video onto YouTube if you’d like. I have no problem showing the class your YouTube video or watching your speech on my own and grading the quality of the work. Your choice. *The speech will be shown to the class unless you have specifically requested to have me watch it on my own.* Can’t I just email you the video? No. Email me the link to your YouTube video, but it must be a link to a video you’ve already uploaded. If you send me the video, there is a chance I will not be able to open it with the software I have, and then you will receive a zero. It MUST be on YouTube with a title that makes it easy to search for, and you MUST email me the link, or send me the link through the Remind app.
