Children’s Safe Harbor Dodge Ball Tournament -Rules Of PlayTEAMS Teams will be made up of 6-12 players. A Maximum of 6 players will compete on one side – minimum age of team member: 16 years BOUNDARIES ISC volleyball court lines – Red Area EQUIPMENT Regulation dodge balls will be used Players must wear athletic shoes (no cleats) – Matching uniforms are required (matching T-shirts) BEGINNING GAME Team listed first on the schedule will choose side to begin match Each game thereafter teams will alternate sides. Or ISC Basketball Court – Court monitor will give guidelines before matches During play, all players must remain in bounds, except to retrieve a ball out of court lines. Players must enter the court immediately after retrieving a ball Team members out of the game, who are retrieving balls for players on the court, should roll all balls back into the playing area (do not hold onto balls out of bounds – please get them back into play) SIDELINES/ CENTERLINES 1) Cross over the centerline and contact opponent’s side of the court PENALTY – OUT OF GAME 2) Stepping out of bounds to avoid being hit – PENALTY – OUT OF GAME PLAYERS MAY TOUCH LINES, BUT NOT GO OVER THEM A match is 15 minutes in duration. The team with the most wins in 15 minutes of play is declared the winner of that match and moves into the next round. To begin the game an equal number of balls are placed on the right half of the centerline – Players go behind their end lines – Upon the signal by the official, players go and get balls on RIGHT SIDE OF CENTERLINE – only your team’s balls are to be retrieved – NOT opponent’s balls FIRST THROWS OF ALL 3 BALLS RETRIEVED – must be from behind the white line (10 feet) Game ends when all players have been eliminated on one side. If time runs out, the team with the most players on the court is declared the winner • If both teams have equal numbers remaining a 2-minute sudden death overtime will be played. This will repeat until a winner is decided GAME PLAY LIVE BALL is a thrown ball that strikes, or is caught by an opposing player without contacting the ground, another ball or player An out is scored by – • • • • Hitting an opponent BELOW the shoulders (THROWER IS OUT IF THEY HIT OPPONENT ABOVE THE SHOULDERS –NOTE: A player who ducks to avoid being hit and is hit above the shoulders is OUT – NOT the thrower – OFFICIAL’S CALL IS FINAL IN THAT SITUATION Catching a live thrown ball – the thrower is out One player from the catching team may come back into the game –“1 out, 1 in” A player may block a ball with a ball they are holding • • Dead balls • • • • • • Hitting players Each team is allowed one (1) 30 second timeout per match (No time-outs – unless called by the officials during the first round) Official may call an “Official Timeout” at their discretion. Rule enforcement • Hitting players ball Player’s ball is hit by opponent’s ball and then the ball hits same player – NO OUT/ DEAD BALL Player’s ball is hit by opponent’s ball and then the ball hits his/her teammate – NO OUT/ DEAD BALL Players ball is hit by opponent’s ball and then ball is caught by teammate – NO OUT/ DEAD BALL Balls which hit the nets, walls, floor, balls hitting other balls in flight, balls that go out of bounds and after hitting a player are dead Players hit while retrieving balls out of bounds are not out of the game Time outs GAME PLAY SITUATIONS • Thrown ball hits player – player is out and then ball hits another player – NO OUT/ DEAD BALL Thrown ball hits player – player is out and then is caught by teammate – THROWER IS NOT OUT/ DEAD BALL • • • • Honor System – Players will be expected to self -rule whether or not a hit was legal or whether they were legally eliminated (there is no need to wait for the Official to declare you out – if you are hit or if your toss is caught legally – you are out) A trained Dodge Ball Official will supervise all contests The Dodge Ball Officials decision is final League Supervisor will make decisions over any situations that may arise during league play After a player is hit, he/ she must exit the court on the nearest sideline. No walking across the court Children’s Safe Harbor and Rockford College’s CODE OF CONDUCT: 1. Understand, appreciate and abide by the rules of the game 2. Respect the integrity and judgment of the game official 3. Respect your opponent and congratulate them following each game/ match 4. You are responsible for your actions and self-control 5. No foul, abusive language 6. Court Official may eject any player for UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT • Foul language • A player who is ruled to have purposely hit above the shoulder • Unnecessary roughness • Arguing with officials, staff, volunteers, participants and fans The penalty of ejection will be that the ejected player will not be allowed to play in the next game
