1. You are judging a Preliminary Men’s event and notice that the skater you are marking has
completed 8 jump elements. Does this affect your marking? If so, please indicate which

3. In judging a Pre-Preliminary event, the skater on the ice has forgotten her program and is
standing in the middle of the ice. Which mark or marks are affected and why.

This interruption could affect both the Technical Merit mark and the Presentation Mark. In
terms of Technical Merit, they are potentially missing elements which will likely lower their
Technical score compared to other skaters. In terms of Presentation, they are missing
choreography which affects use of ice and variation of speed, they have lost the connection
to the music thus impacting expression of the character of the music and harmonious
composition and conformity with the music.
4. What is a cheated jump and how is your marking affected by cheated jumps?

A cheated jump is a jump where the rotation has either been started or completed on the
ice instead of in the air. Cheated jumps must be penalized in the Technical Merit mark.

5. You are judging a Preliminary Women’s Freeskate event. The required program time is 2
minutes.

6. You are judging your first event at an Area competition. You are judging with 2 senior
skaters and are therefore appointed Referee of the panel. One of the competitors falls and
injures herself during her program. What should you do?
a. Ask the music personnel to stop the skater’s music
b. Ensure the skater is ok and able to continue the program

8. When arriving at a competition for the first time you are unsure what to do. Who should
you speak with to locate your appropriate paper work for your events?

You should try to locate the event Technical Representative. The Technical Representative
is responsible for all judges activity at a competition.
9. Arriving at a competition, you realize that several skaters in an event you are to judge are
coached by your former coach. Can you judge this event? Why or why not?

10. You find a skater’s program music to be rather “abstract” and extremely “annoying” to
listen to, how would this affect the mark you eventually give the performance?

Only the ability of the skater to express their interpretation of the music through rhythm
and movement should be reflected in the mark awarded. A judge’s personal taste in music
should not affect the Presentation mark at all.

11. During the warm-up of an event that you are to judge your attention is drawn to one of the
skaters costume that appears inappropriate. Is it acceptable for you to indicate to the
other judge what you have seen?
