DEVELOPMENT
4 Directors responsible to plan, coordinate and implement/monitor
development programs at National and Regional level.
Provincial/Regional Convenors responsible for planning, coordination and
implementation/monitoring of development programs in the Region,
record and submit reports on development, to Directors.
Each Director keeps record of all activities/programs/projects in portfolio
concerned.
Development programs aimed at players and officials.
Leagues at club level, Regional and Provincial tournaments and S A
Championships used as platform for development.
Development Workshops conducted by the Executive in each province.
Compilation of data base of members, players and technical officials and
records thereof kept by each Director to feed into NSA data base.
Development programs run in partnership with leading netball countries
(involving taking technical officials overseas to learn from top officials in
the game as well as officiate in tournaments there while being mentored
and evaluated).
Regular training camps in partnership with High Performance
Institutes/Centres.
SELECTION
Director Selection coordinates all selection processes and oversees the
selection process of all national squads and teams.
A team of selectors is appointed to work with Director Selection for
selection of squad players and national team players. The Executive
ratifies final team lists.
The National Coach for the S A Spar Protea team sits in all selection
meetings/sessions for guidance and advice to selectors on the type of
players with potential to be in the senior team; while other coaches for the
junior national teams sit in selection meetings/sessions when selection of
players into teams under their care are conducted.
National Championships, the National Netball League and the Merit
Tournament are the main platforms used for selection of players into
squads.
S A Games, SASSU and S A Schools Netball also provide other platforms
for selection of players.
The Selection policy clearly outlines the required level of competence of
any individual appointed as a selector and type of players to be selected.
COACHES AND UMPIRES
Both Director Umpires and Director Coaches keep data base of all umpires
and coaches and their grading (level) respectively.
Senior umpires and coaches are appointed into the Board of Umpires and
Board of Coaches under the leadership of the Director concerned and their
responsibility is to train and mentor identified potential umpires and
coaches and also grade umpires and coaches.
Grading of umpires and evaluation of coaches occurs at S A
Championships.
Both Director Umpires and Director Coaches have the responsibility to
coordinate and monitor all development programs of umpires and coaches
in the country to ensure that IFNA standards, and therefore NSA
standards, are not compromised (any development in these areas taking
place even in schools and anywhere where netball is played).
The career path of umpires and coaches should ideally be up to
international levels.
DEMARCATION AND STRUCTURES
The Director Demarcation and Structures is
responsible for ensuring that NSA Constitution,
policies, rules and regulations are adhered to by
members.
She has to ensure that structures/committees
entrusted with the responsibility to run netball in
the regions are established and they are
functional.
She manages affiliation and registration of
regions to NSA.
TRANSFORMATION
NSA has to ensure that netball is played by all people of S A.
NSA has to assist regions in the provision of facilities, depending on
availability of funds.
NSA has to ensure that all players have equal opportunity to compete in
all national and international competitions.
NSA has to ensure that all technical officials have equal opportunity for
growth towards officiating at national and international level.
NSA has to ensure that there is a balance between participation and
performance. While the ultimate aim is to ensure that every player/official
gets equal opportunity to participate, quality performance should not be
compromised (need for constant review of transformation policy to
achieve both objectives, i.e. participation and performance).
Current status as reflected by teams presented to NSA for national
championships is that both black and white players and officials are well
represented.
FUNDING AND SPONSORS
NSA receives funding from SRSA for development.
Spar sponsors only the senior national team.
Lottery funds development programs according to approved
programs.
Gilbert sponsors NSA with balls for national championships.
New Balance sponsors NSA with shoes (playing shoes) for
national teams.
The SABC is NSA’s broadcasting sponsor as well as the
naming right’s sponsor of the NNL.
N.B. All Executive Committee members serve on voluntary
basis as NSA cannot afford to provide salaries with benefits
should the Executive Committee members perform NSA
duties on full-time basis.
DEVELOPMENTS PROJECTS
Merit tournament
Executive workshops
National Squad camps
Schools projects
Establishment of Structures
Netball equipments for regions
Regional development tournament
Decentralization of regional squad camps
MEDIA COVERAGE
NSA enjoys reasonable coverage from most newspapers
and almost all radio stations in the country.
Some radio stations conduct live broadcasts with
representatives of NSA.
We do get negative publicity from time to time, but we
have been able to give objective responses towards that
and it also helps that we have established a circle of
journalists who understand netball, journalists who have
covered netball stories for some time.
NSA Council understands protocol to be followed when
there is need for comment on netball matters.
NATIONAL TEAMS’ INVOLVEMNT
The S A Spar Protea team is currently ranked 9th out of 22
countries; we are ranked 2nd in Africa after losing to Malawi
at the 2007 WNC as well as losing to them in the test series
played in S A last year.
The U/21 team ended 5th at the YWNC in 2005.
Our U/20 have won all Zone 6 Games encounters and we
hope to defend the title even at this year’s games.
The U/21 national team will participate at this year’s
COSANA Games in Lesotho; they are the defending
champions and we hope to defend that title as well.
The S A Spar Protea team will play a test series against
Barbados in S A in October.
The S A Spar Protea team will tour for a Tri-Nations with
