Step 1 Emergency Procedures
On-board an aircraft, the most important
any crewmember is to ensure the safety
passengers at all times.
I. Safety Demonstration
Definition: A detailed explanation given
takeoff to airline passengers about the
features of a commercial aircraft.
role of
of the
before
safety
I. Safety Demonstration
 Form:
On smaller aircraft (used for
short haul domestic flights), usually 1
or 2 stewardesses will demonstrate the
safety procedures while one CA reads
out the safety information.
On larger aircrafts (used for long
haul or international flights), the
passenger safety demonstration is
performed through the aircrafts video
system.
I. Safety Demonstration
 Content:
 a reminder to review the aircraft safety card
 the use of the seat belt
 the location and use of the emergency exits, evacuation slides
and emergency floor lighting
 the use of the oxygen mask
 the location and use of the life vests, life rafts and flotation
devices
 the brace position
 a reminder not to smoke on board
 the precautions to take before take-off and landing
II. Safety Demonstration Items
Seatbelt:
A seat belt, sometimes
called a safety belt, is a safety
harness designed to secure
the occupant of a vehicle
against harmful movement
that may result from a
collision or a sudden stop.
II. Safety Demonstration Items
Life Vest :
The passengers’ life
vests can be found stowed
under their seats. The CA
demonstrates how to wear
and operate the life vest. At
no time must the life vest be
inflated inside the aircraft, as
this will inhibit the exit of
passengers in an emergency.
II. Safety Demonstration Items
Oxygen Mask:
An
oxygen
mask
provides a method to
transfer breathing oxygen
gas from a storage tank to
the lungs. Oxygen masks
may cover the nose and
mouth (oral nasal mask) or
the entire face (full face
mask). They may be made
of plastic, silicone, or
rubber.
II. Safety Demonstration Items
 Evacuation slide :
An evacuation slide is an inflatable slide used to
evacuate an aircraft quickly. An escape slide is required on
all commercial (passenger carrying) aircraft where the door
sill height is such that, in the event of an evacuation,
passengers would be unable to "step down" from the door
uninjured.
III. Passenger Safety Card
An aircraft safety card is a document instructing
passengers on an aircraft about the procedures for
dealing with various emergency conditions that
might arise during the flight.
The safety cards are usually provided by airlines
on all commercial flights, usually located in the
back of the seat in front of each passenger.
III. Passenger Safety Card
 Sample :
IV. Life Rafts
Sometimes aircrafts have to fly over large
expanses of water; therefore, an emergency
life raft is necessary. Upon ditching, the life
rafts are thrown out through the passenger
and service doors and open automatically
upon hitting the water.
Aviation Life Rafts are generally light
weight bag stored life rafts.
V. Brace Position
The aircraft brace position is primary for
minimizing the chance of your head flying
off and making identification of bodies
easier.
V. Brace Position
If the aircraft is about to make an
emergency landing, adopt the brace
position, and stay there until the aircraft
comes to a complete stop - there may be
more than one jolt.
V. Brace Position
 Cabin Crew Brace Position
After checking all the passengers have
adopted the correct brace position, it is
essential that the CA’s take up their own
brace positions. If a CA sits in a forward
facing jump seat, he should sit with his chin
resting on his chest. But if he sits in a rear
facing jump seat, the head should be
upright so that the back of his head is
resting against the head restraint.
Step 2 Words and Expressions
Step3
Group Discussion
 Requirements:
Students are required to read the
text quickly and discuss with group
mates to find the correct answers to
the following questions.
The performance of the group
members will be credited.
Questions:
 What’s the most important role of the
cabin crew?
 Name as many items as you can that
form a part of the emergency equipment
