Activities Using Leaves
Acorn Toss
Divide the class into small groups and have each make a small pile of leaves and
then each group forms a line the same distance from their pile. Give each group
several acorns and have them play a game of Acorn Toss. Each player gets a
chance to toss the acorns at the pile. Points can be awarded for landing in the pile,
rolling into the pile, hitting the pile or rolling off the pile.
Leaf Relay
Divide the group into teams of 3 to 4 and give each a chair to be set an equal
distance from their team. Each team assigns a leader who stands on the chair with
a group of leaves in their hand. On the signal, a team member runs to the chair,
kneels down and tries to catch the leaf, using one hand, which the leader has
dropped from an outreached hand. The member can move but must stay on their
knees. If they miss the leaf the leader drops another one until the exchange is
clean. The member then runs back with their leaf and tags the next person. Play
as long as you like but be sure that all members get to be the leader.
Leaf Stuff
Once you have your pile of leaves, divide the group into small groups and give each a
mason jar. In a relay format allow each member a short time period to run to the
pile, stuff the jar with leaves and return. After emptying the jar repeat the
process with all the members. Have the group count their leaves at the end to see
who has the most.
Pin the Leaf on the Tree
Draw a picture of a tree on chart paper and mark the spot where the leaf is to go.
Each player is given a blindfold and a magic marker. They are guided to the tree
and asked to mark an “X” on the tree where they think the leaf might be.
Standing Long Jump
From a standing position jump into a pile of leaves.
Triple Jump
Take three steps before jumping into a pile of leaves.
High Jump
Make a high pile of leaves and try to jump over it.
Relay
Each team of four, sets up an equal number of leaf piles set equal distances apart
on a straight line. They each run in a zigzag pattern down and back around their
piles until all four have had a turn.
