ALA 2014 Midwinter Meeting Agenda & Notes
January 25, 2014
1. Introduction
Valerie Hill led the F2F meeting in Philadelphia and Joe Floyd led the inworld meeting in
Second Life, both simultaneous. Val introduced herself as current Chair of the ALA
Communities & Virtual Worlds MIG and past Convener of the ACRL VWIG, Joe Floyd and
Esther Grassian as current Co-Conveners, and J.J. Jacobson as Convener-Elect.
2. Report on VWIG activities since July 1, 2013
a. Esther reported that it's been a very busy year so far for the ACRL VWIG! Joe has set up a
blog where he’s been reporting on the many programs we’ve held in SL at the CVL this past
year: http://acrl-vwig.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html We have had programs on the
following topics:
• Aug: Pinterest Basics for Librarians – EG
• Sep: Blended Information Behaviour in Second Life – Sheila Webber
• Oct: MOOCs & the Future of Open Education (jointly with ALA group) – Valerie Hill,
Ilene Frank & Michelle Keba
• Nov: ECIL Report – Sheila Webber & Esther Grassian
• Dec: Virtual Book Covers—Authentic Avatars for Librarians and Educators – Zinnia

b. Esther also reported that in addition to Joe’s blog, we have an ACRL VWIG Pinterest
Board where you can find images from many of our programs:

c. For the remainder of this year, we’re planning some additional programs, though some are
tentative right now, but please save these dates
• On Sunday, Feb. 16th, we hope to have a discussion of the draft revision of the ACRL
Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education, depending on when
in February they’re released.
• On Sunday, March 16th, we’ll have a program on Embedded Librarianship with Val,
April Aultman Becker & David Shumaker.
• We’re working on programs for the remainder of the year (April 20th, May 18th & June
28th at ALA Annual, and will announce those when they’re confirmed.
3. Valerie Hill then led the ALA Virtual Communities & Libraries Member Interest Group
meeting. Plans for 2014, include an exploration of libraries and librarians in other virtual
worlds such as Inworldz and Kitely.
4. A Q& A period followed. The attendees' in Philadelphia were very interested in knowing the
kinds of activities librarians were engaged in within Second Life.
