Comparing Skills
SECTION ONE: Identifying all standards and objectives—
The students will be able to (TSWBAT)…make comparisons and contrasts by creating a
Venn Diagram through a website called http://www.readwritethink.org on their
computers that compares the two stories Auntie Tiger and Little Red Riding Hood.
The Venn Diagram will be constructed based on the information provided in the texts
as well as classroom discussion throughout the story.
Standards/Goal:
 CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.9
Compare and contrast the most important points presented by two texts on the same
topic
SECTION TWO: Identifying method(s) of assessment used throughout lesson— (only
need to select one)
Pre-assessment— before read aloud- Ask students to recall information on the story
Little Red Riding Hood.
After read aloud- ask students to recall Venn Diagrams and how to label them. We
have been working on them for three days.
Formative Assessment— Think- pair- share that occurs throughout the read aloud will
assess the students in understanding the similarities and differences in the characters
throughout Auntie Tiger and Little Red Riding Hood.
Summative Assessment— Students will create their own (individual work) Venn
Diagram online by comparing and contrasting the two texts, Auntie Tiger and Little
Red Riding Hood.

SECTION THREE: Identifying the learning activities/instructional strategies and
details as to how the lesson will be carried out-Time Frame: 20 minutes
Lesson Steps/Details:
Introducing Auntie Tiger:
1. I will talk to the students about the American version of this story, titled Little
Red Riding Hood. I will ask students to recall the plot of the story and the
main characters.
2.I will then introduce our new book, Auntie Tiger to the students. I will explain
that the story is similar to Little Red Riding Hood, but takes place in China, not
America.
Starting to Read Aloud:
3. I will begin reading. At similar and different parts, I will stop to ask students to
compare the two stories. Questions are outlined below in chronological order.
The book is marked on each page for me to know when to stop and ask
questions to the students.
After Reading Aloud:
4.Once the reading is complete, I will allow students to use their computers to
create their own Venn Diagram online. We will (together) go onto our
computers and log onto the sight http://www.readwritethink.org/ to review the
needed labels and number of facts for each part of the Venn Diagram. After
everything is clarified, we will begin to construct the diagrams.
Starting Venn Diagram:
5.I will allot 5-7 minutes for the students to make the Venn diagram online. The
Diagram must at least have 3 differences on the American version of Little Red
Riding Hood, 3 differences in the Chinese version, and 3 similarities.
6.Students will then be asked to share their Venn Diagrams with me through email
so I can give the students credit for completing their summative assessment for
the lesson and doing the objective correctly.
Anticipatory Set: (How are you going to
connect background knowledge to new
content?)
Modeling: (pg. # and a word-for-word
description of your think aloud)
Before beginning:
Good readers listen very closely as I read
the story. Good readers also pay close
attention to the illustrations in the book.
Throughout the story we are going to
listen to identify similarities and
differences between this story and Little
Ask students: Remember reading the
story Little Red Riding Hood? Well Auntie
Tiger is a similar story that occurs in
China. Two girls are left home alone
while their mother runs to the grocery
store for needed things. While the
2
Red Riding Hood, the story we read two
mother is away, a series of suspenseful
events unfold! You will not know what will
happen next! Use your good listening skills
to identify similar and different events
that occur throughout Auntie Tiger and
Little Red Riding Hood.
days ago. Remember, it was about a girl
who went to visit her grandma, but her
grandma was actually a Wolf in disguise!
Let’s begin to read to see what is the
same and different!
Begin Reading:
1. (first sticky) Hmmm…this book says the
story is taking place in China. This is a
different setting than The Little Red
Riding Hood. This is a good comparison
for our Venn Diagram chart. Since the
settings are different, the settings would
be written in the difference columns.
2. -after reading page- (second sticky)
What do you notice that is similar about
what is occurring with what the tiger is
doing? (tiger is dressed like an old woman;
wolf dressed like an old woman). Since it
is a similarity, where would it go on a Venn
Diagram chart? At this point, I would call
on a student. I would ask he or she to
point to the printed out diagram of the
location for the similarity. I would not
write this in.
3. – after reading page- (third sticky) Wow,
does anyone know why I am stopping on
this page? How is this similar to Little
Red Riding Hood? (answer- the wolf was
also welcomed in a home and they both
are in bed). Class, remember where
similarities go on our Venn Diagram
charts. Choral response can be given.
4. –after reading page- (fourth sticky) Wow
class. Does anyone remember this
happening in The Little Red Riding Hood?
Wait for children’s nod. What happened
that was different? (younger sister was
eaten) Class, where would this difference
go on our Venn Diagram? Choral
Response.
After Reading Aloud Questions
5. How are the characters different in
3
Auntie Tiger? How are they similar?
Think Pair Share.
5. How is the ending different? (last
sticky) Keep this response to yourself. We
have discussed many similarities and
differences throughout the story of
Auntie Tiger. Some things are very similar
to The Little Red Riding Hood and some
events that occurred are not the same.
After Discussing the Text:
6.Let’s go to the website
http://www.readwritethink.org/ to create
our very own diagrams.
7. Once getting to the website, review
where the similarities and differences go
on a Venn Diagram, how to add text,
label, and how to change sizes of the
diagram circles.
Questions Before and After Reading: (minimum of 6; 3 MUST focus on the reading
strategy being presented/modeled; please include page #s)
1. (before) Students , remember the story Little Red Riding Hood? Turn and talk to a
partner and remind them what the story was about.
2. (first page/ first sticky)- students, where is China? Ask individual student.
3. (first sticky continued) Hmmm…this book says it is taking place in China. This is a
different setting than The Little Red Riding Hood. This is a good comparison for our
Venn Diagram chart. Since the settings are different, the settings would be written in
the difference columns. See, (model on a printed out Venn Diagram where I would
write that)
4. -after reading page- (second sticky) What do you notice that is similar about what is
going to happen? (tiger is dressed like an old woman; wolf dressed like an old woman).
Since it is a similarity, where would it go on a Venn Diagram chart? At this point, I
would call on a student.
5. – after reading page- (third sticky) Wow, does anyone know why I am stopping on this
page? How is this similar to Little Red Riding Hood? (answer- the wolf was also
welcomed in a home and they both are in bed). Class, remember where similarities go
on our Venn Diagram charts. Anyone remember? Choral response can be given.
6. –after reading page- (fourth sticky) Wow class. I don’t remember this happening in
The Little Red Riding Hood. What happened that was different? (younger sister was
eaten) Class, where would this difference go on our Venn Diagram? Choral Response.
7. How are the characters different in Auntie Tiger? How are they similar? Think Pair
Share.
8. How is the ending different? (last sticky) Keep this response to yourself. We have
4
discussed many similarities and differences throughout the story of Auntie Tiger.
Some things are very similar to The Little Red Riding Hood and some events that
occurred are not.
9. Let’s go to the website. Who recalls where to put the similarities in a Venn Diagram?
10. Okay, now what about the differences? Where do they go?
Closure:
Students will be finish this lesson by creating their own Venn Diagram with proper
labels and with enough information in the correct places. They will be using their newgained knowledge learned in ELA and technology skills to complete the summative
assessment.
Materials:
Book- the book titled Auntie Tiger is needed so I can read the story to the class.
Computers- computers are needed to create Venn Diagrams.
Internet connection- needed to get to application and to email their final Venn
Diagrams
