THE WELSH COMMUNITY CARE INFORMATION SYSTEM (WCCIS) Fact Sheet What is the WCCIS? The Welsh Community Care Information System (WCCIS) is an electronic information sharing platform designed to deliver improved care and support for people across Wales. By allowing information to be shared quickly and securely, the WCCIS enables Health Boards and Social Services staff to work together to plan, co-ordinate, and deliver services and support for individuals, families and communities. It will show a patient/client’s progress within their Health and Social Care journey and provide professionals with clear and consistent data records. What are the benefits of using the WCCIS? The ability to share information across Health and Social Care services has been frustrated by the use of different Social Care and NHS Wales community health systems across Wales. This is a consistent problem that has often created a barrier to effective integration between Local Authorities and Health Boards. The WCCIS provides a solution to many of these information sharing problems, with some of the key advantages being: Access to more comprehensive, joined up data Less chasing for information Less paperwork More time for staff More person-focused, coordinated care for individuals and their families. We all access the same up to date records We have better quality information We make faster, better clinical decisions We can work more closely with our partners Service users are more involved and feel safer. 1 WCCIS User What will it look like? The WCCIS platform was created by Microsoft, so its appearance will already look familiar to professionals in the Health and Social Care sector. The system benefits from a user friendly menu structure, detailed search functions and electronic client records that are easy to navigate. Users are able to make referrals, manage their caseloads and share information with ease. What does this mean for Western Bay? In 2015, the Western Bay Leadership Group agreed to adopt the WCCIS within its constituent organisations (ABMU Health Board, the City and County of Swansea Council, Bridgend County Borough Council and Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council). In April 2016, Bridgend County Borough Council became the first early adopter of the WCCIS, with Ceredigion County Council and Powys County Council and Teaching Health Board expected to follow suit later this year. The other Western Bay partner organisations will launch the WCCIS between December 2017 and February 2019. In the meantime, plans are in place to work closely with staff across the Health and Social Care sector to continue shaping the system’s functions and features in line with each organisation’s working practices.
