First Sunday of Advent
Pastors Thoughts
The season of Advent, which we begin this Sunday, is a time of
preparation. As Jesus says in today’s Gospel, “Be prepared, for at
an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come” (Mt 24:44).
Thus, we must always be prepared for the coming (in Latin
adventus) of Christ. And He comes to us in the Sacraments,
especially in the Eucharist, where we can listen to His words and
receive His Body. In four weeks, He will come to us in the joyful
celebration of Christmas. He will also come to us at the end of the
world and at the end of our earthly journey. Finally, He comes to us
in the ordinary circumstances of our daily lives, “For our salvation
is nearer now than when we first believed” (Rom 13:11). Let us,
therefore, be prepared and “awake from sleep” (Rom 13:11). “Let
us . . . throw off the works of darkness and put on the armor of
light” (Rom 13:12). Let us “put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make
no provisions for the desires of the flesh” (Rom 13:14).

“A model of care has been developed specifically for families whose
infant is likely to die before or after birth. Often called ‘personal
