Saints Player Code of Conduct

SAINTS BASKETBALL CLUB BORONIA INC
PLAYER CODE OF CONDUCT.
By way of registration to play in the Winter 2015 basketball season, you are hereby agreeing and
accepting to abide by the below code of conduct for the Saints Basketball Club.
The purpose of the Player’s code of conduct is to set a standard of behaviour required by each and every
Saints Basketball Club representative and to ensure all players enjoy their experience in playing basketball
for the Saints Basketball Club Boronia Inc. This will ensure the improvement in basketball players and assist
their team as a whole to improve.
All players and parents must ensure that everyone understands and discuss in detail with the child of what it
means to play as a team and abide by this code.
Every Saints Basketball player MUST at all times:
 Play for their own enjoyment (ie not just for coaches or parents)

Be encouraging and supportive of all team mates (ie through positive, constructive encouragement
and communication.

Be willing to listen and accept constructive criticism from their coaches to grow and develop as a
player.

Push themselves to improve by practising hard with 100% commitment (ie by training with focus,
effort and diligent listening skills)

Push themselves by playing with 100% commitment to the team and as a team player (ie playing
with focus, effort and sharing the ball around to work as a team)

Play each game for the team’s benefit and work equally hard for yourself and for your team. (ie by
playing unselfishly and not for their individual benefit)

Play fair, and be a good sport. Play with composure and self-discipline and not wilfully break the
rules of the association. (ie by committing deliberate fouls)

Control your temper.

Accept that court time is earned through attitude and effort, and that coaches will do their best to
ensure equal court time for such players.

Respect referees and officials by accepting all calls graciously.

Show good sportsmanship by interacting with referees, officials, opponents and opposition coaches
in a professional, good humoured manner. (ie by offering a hand to help opponents up from the
floor after a foul is given and by shaking the hands of the opposition players at the end of each
game. (with eye contact)

Treat all players as you would like to be treated.

Respect all the facilities that the Saints Basketball uses by not damaging basketball venues and
equipment (ie floors, balls, lights and rings)

Respect the rights, diginity and worth of every player.

Most importantly have fun!!! Set your own goals and achievements for the year, communicate with
your coach as much as you can.


Basketball is a recreational activity for enjoyment, team work and health.
A breach of the Saints Basketball Club’s Code of Conduct agreement may result in disciplinary action by the
Coach (following approval by the Saints committee).
In the matter of a serious offence by any player, coach or parent, individuals may be liable to referral of their
conduct and the consequences may include:



Omission (short-term) or suspension (medium-term) from playing for the team.
Permanent de-registration from the Saints Basketball Club
A fine imposed at the discretion of the Saints Basketball Club.
Ultimately, whether you are representing the Saints Basketball Club as a coach, player, parent or legal
guardian, your aim should be to always conduct yourself in a way that ensures the enjoyment of every player
in a safe environment.

Basketball is intended to be a recreational activity for enjoyment and health. This code of conduct has been
developed by Basketball Victoria to give participants some guide to the expectations it has on those
participants. It is intended to assist everyone to obtain the maximum benefit and enjoyment from their
involvement in basketball. As a result, the quality of participation will be improved so people are more likely to
start and continue their involvement in basketball. Enjoy!

Encourage your children to participate for their own interest and enjoyment, not yours.
2.
Encourage children to always play by the rules.
3.
Teach children that honest effort is always as important as victory.
4.
Focus on developing skills and playing the game. Reduce the emphasis on winning.
5.
A child learns best by example. Applaud good play by all teams.
6.
Do not criticise your or others’ children in front of others.
7.
Accept decisions of all referees as being fair and called to the best of their ability.
8.
Set a good example by your own conduct, behaviour and appearance.
9.
Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from sporting activities.
10.
Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every person.
11.
Respect and follow club requirements, processes and the clubs volunteers including all
coaches, officials and club administrators.
12.
Raise concerns on any club matters or team issues through the committee in writing.
