Mr. Canale’s 6th grade Tech Class (Mrs. Wells’ class) The Viking Voice Class Motto: You’re not finished when you lose, you’re finished when you quit! December, 2015 Air Pollution in China By: Jessica Means & Kate Kittleson Smog, fog, or even haze combined with pollution isn’t a pretty sight. Now, imagine your city is covered in this muck! Schools and construction sites are forced to shut down, and you are stuck inside, escaping the barely breathable air. Sadly, this is currently affecting people in China, causing them to spend money to deal with the issue. Some people have gone to the extent of wearing face masks and installing air purifiers in their homes. On December 8th, Beijing’s government issued a red alert for the first time, due to the pollution and poor air quality. The air in Beijing is classified as “very unhealthy”, which is 10 times higher than the World Health Organization recommends. Extra measures are being enforced to reduce the air pollution, such as limiting car use and not using fireworks or outdoor barbecues. We hope that the people in China are able to resolve this problem and live in clean air in the future. 1 Table of Contents News: Air Pollution in China………..pg. 1 App of the Month: Akinator, The Web Genius…………………………...pg. 2 Movie Review: Love the Coopers…...pg. 2 Music Review: Stressed Out............ ..pg. 2 Staff Spotlight: Miss Leech….............pg. 3 Video Game Review: Escaping the Prison...............................................pg. 3 Trivia Time!......................................pg. 4 What’s up With That?..........……..….pg. 4 Celebrity Spotlight: Sofia Vergara…...pg. 4 HV Upcoming Events………………..pg. 4 Two Thumbs Up for Love the Coopers!! App of the Month By: Dylan Rogers & Kyle Tanner By: Capri Paz & Samantha Forrester Love the Coopers is a great movie to see on your night off. This Christmas themed movie is PG 13 and will always keep you entertained. The movie has six different stories that connect at the end. A few of the stories include Sam and Charlotte, who are the grandparents, and they invite all of their children and grandchildren to Christmas dinner. Their son, Hank, has a little girl who seems to have a problem with blurting out rude comments. Their daughter Emma wants to get a fancy present for Charlotte, ends up stealing a broche from the mall, gets arrested, and ends up in the back of a police car talking to the police man about letting out his feelings. Lastly, there is Eleanor, who is Charlotte and Sam’s other daughter. She flew home for Christmas but does not like her family, so stays at the airport for a little while until she meets a military man named Joe. Eleanor wants to trick her family and act like she is engaged to Joe so her parents, Charlotte and Sam, and her brother, Hank, don’t give her “the look” for not having a boyfriend in so long. We think that this movie is the best Christmas movie there is! Akinator, The Web Genius is an app that cost $1.99. You can also play for free on Android and PC. It is a great game and fun for everyone who plays. The app has gone viral since last year, and it currently has over 5 million views! The purpose of the game is for Akinator the genie to guess the character that you are thinking of. The genie asks a total of 25 questions or less, each time narrowing down the answer to the person you are thinking of. According to IBtimes, Akinator, the Web Genius uses a program called Limule. Limule is a huge algorithm that uses Google to find characters. Overall, Akinator is a unique, fun game that is user friendly and a great time killer. We really like this game because it impresses us. We would rate this game 10 out of 10. Stressed Out is a Hit! By: Mia El-Bayar & Eliot Richards The song “Stressed Out” is sung by the talented and unique band Twenty One Pilots. In November, it made the top 10 on Billboard’s music chart. It describes the responsibilities and stresses of an adult. One important line in the song is, “Wake up, you need to make money”. This describes the stress of having to make their own money. We like the part that shows two teenagers riding tri-cycles and drinking juice boxes. It represents that they want to hold on to their childhood, when they were not under pressure. It also contains a white room where the two teenage boys sit in two beds, being yelled at by various adults. They are saying, “Wake up, you need to make money?” We like the song “Stressed Out” because it is a great song to dance to, and it has a clear message to it. The song can relate to many people, and it is a great song to rock out to. It is school appropriate and contains no bad language or bad content in the music video. We recommend buying this song 100%! 2 Staff Spotlight: Miss Leech By: Ella Walter, Ellie Spotts & Kathleen Stender Escaping the Prison By: Hayden Chester, Jayden Yan & Tyler Wood Escaping the Prison is fun game that is free in the app store. The object of the game is to escape from the prison without getting caught. If the police catch you then its game over, and you try again. The main character in this game is Henry Stickman. He is the one who is trying to escape the prison. Here’s a little hint: pick the escape route that is the least obvious, and you will win. If you pick an obvious route, then you’re likely to get caught. This game has many different escape options to choose from. There are 9 achievements in the game. Throughout the game, there are hidden donuts, and if you get them all, you will get an achievement. There are 5 games in the Henry Stickman series. The thing we like the most about this is all the funny achievements, like the donut one or the 18 unique fails. We think this game is great, and everyone should play it! We chose Miss Leech to interview for “The Staff Spotlight” for multiple reasons. We wanted you to get to know the real Miss Leech out of the classroom. Our first question was, “Do you have any regrets about becoming a teacher?” It was no surprise that she said, “I don’t have a single regret about becoming a teacher. It is important to do what you love, and I love teaching.” Then we asked her what she likes to do in her free time. Her exact words were, “Spend time with Jack, go to the park with him, and create firsts with him. I am also very passionate about cooking.” “Where are your favorite places to vacation?” we asked. Miss Leech’s response was, “My favorite vacation spots are places that have beaches and places that you can swim and snorkel at.” We had such a wonderful time interviewing Miss Leech! 3 Trivia Time! Sofia Vergara What’s up With That: SelfBalancing Scooters By: Giuliana Haug, Natalie Barrera & Alexandra Nounna-Beckwith By: Scott Truninger, Ayden Zielger & Jack Scholze These breathtaking balancing toys aren’t only on every single kid’s wish list, they are also one of the hottest toys out there. These scooters aren’t just toys, they are the future. Some features that these astonishing vehicles provide are: music, self-balancing capabilities, LED lights, and they also can reach speeds up to 9 miles per hour! They aren’t just popular, they are sold out on most retailers’ websites. The cost of these scooters is from $300- $1,800! Some retailer brands overprice the scooters. Examples of these rip off brands are Io Hawk and PhunkeeDuck. “We think this is such a cool toy because it can be used as transportation or you can do tricks.” says group member Scott Truninger. According to Jack Scholze, “These scooters are a new lifestyle.” Fellow group member Ayden Ziegler thinks, “They are kool with a K.” HV Upcoming Events… Jan. 6th- Star Wars: The Force Awakens private screening @ 3pm at the New Port Theater Jan 13th- CDM yogurt truck at HV!
