We began as a home operation, with Mary and Leo Spada delivering prepackaged salads to working women during WWII. The company moved into a larger facility in just a few short years, and by 1960, United Salad Co. was recognized as a fullline wholesaler. When we started our organic program in 2001, we were excited to join the market with a small line of excellent quality. Today, we carry more than five hundred organic items and are open twenty-four hours, seven days a week with delivery to Oregon, Idaho, Washington and Alaska. We ship to restaurants, schools, retail stores and fruit stands. Our team of organic buyers, with more than sixty years of experience, keeps us fully stocked with a separate category built for growing our organic division. Consumers understand the healthy benefits of organic, and want to support the farms that grow it. By choosing organic, they are rewarded with produce that is picked and shipped at its peak, when flavor and nutrient levels are highest. They can also enjoy the array of exciting specialty and exotic items available from every growing area. We work with local, west coast, national and international vendor partners to source produce grown with environmentally responsible practices that encourage good soil and air quality, like crop rotation and natural pest control. Our buyers make a special effort to support and work with local growers whenever possible. The shorter distance from farm to table uses less fuel to bring more nutrients to the customers, which is better for nutrition and air quality. Organic produce can be affected by seasonality more than conventionally grown produce, but we have worked hard to bridge gaps. By maintaining our own trucking company,w we keep freight costs competitive, with an extensive distribution system that allows us to ship your needs from any growing area. With our organic fruits, vegetables, salads and dressings, United Salad Co. supports the health of our customers, and our community. Food Safety Even though our high rate of rotation ensures extremely fresh product, our management and staff go the extra mile when it comes to food safety. Preventing food borne illness is paramount at each of our facilities. In addition to our strict HACCP system, all of our facilities have the honor of being distinguished as a SQF Level 3 facilities, the highest certification available. Constant microbial inspection and stringent employee training programs ensure that our products are fresh, clean, and safe. Our in-house and independent product and environmental tests are in full compliance with FDA, ODA, and the EPA. It is our belief that food safety begins in the field. We monitor our produce continually and only accept product from farmers and suppliers that uphold our philosophy and maintain the unbroken cold chain, Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
