The Kingdom of the Netherlands

Holland is a name in common usage given to
two regions in the western part of the
Netherlands. The name 'Holland' is also often
used to refer to the whole of the Netherlands,
although this is not formally correct. Today, the
former County of Holland consists of the two
Dutch provinces of North Holland and South
Holland.

Geography
Holland is situated in the west of the Netherlands. A maritime(靠
海的) water-oriented（面向水的） region, Holland lies on the
North Sea at the mouths of the Rhine and the Meuse (Maas). It
has many rivers and lakes and an extensive island canal（运河）
and waterway system. To the south is Zealand.The region is
bordered on the east by the Ijsselmeer and four different
provinces of the Netherlands.
History
The character, however, of the people of the
province of Holland, its qualities of toughness,
of endurance（忍耐力）, of seamanship（航海
技术） and maritime enterprise（事业）,
spring from the peculiar（怪异的） amphibious
（具有双重性的） nature of the country, which
differs from that of any other country in the
world. The age-long struggle against the ocean
and the river floods, which has converted the
marshes, that lay around the mouths of the
Rhine (Rijn), the Meuse (Maas) and the
Scheldt (Schelde), by toilsome（劳累的）
labour and skill into fertile and productive soil,
has left its impress on the whole history of this
people.

degree, what may be termed an old-world

Nations,and it is a West
Germanic language spoken
by over 22 million people as
a native language, and over
5 million people as a second
language

Amsterdam, Rotterdam and
The Hague. Amsterdam is
formally the capital of the
Netherlands and its most
important city..
Amsterdam is famous for its old canals and its old Dutch
painting. It has been called the Venice of the North; but very
different is its somber（暗淡的） quietude（平静的） from the
sunny Italian city among the waters. There is a beauty of
gaiety（花哨的） and a beauty of gravity; and Amsterdam in
its older parts — on the Heerengracht and the
Keizersgracht — has the beauty of gravity.

A windmill is a machine

commonly built on. In
much of Europe,

The Netherlands is not
renowned（有名的）
for their wine both as
they are not a nation of
wine drinkers and that
they do not have the
ideal climate for
producing it. The Dutch
do though produce
some of the most
famous lagers in the
world such as Amstel
and Heineken which is
the forth largest
brewery（酿造厂） in
the world.
Probably one of the
most famous food
products to come out
of the Netherlands is
cheese. The Dutch
produce an enormous
quantity of cheese that
is enjoyed in all four
corners of the world.
Some of the most well
known cheeses
produced in Holland
are Gouda, Edam,
Leyden and
Leerdammer.
