Lake Alice Trail
Selected for the Hiking
Trail Marathon!
The lovingly-maintained 1.6mile trail around Lake Alice
on the Uplands campus is
part of the Cumberland
Plateau Hiking Trail Marathon
this year. All trails chosen for
the 26.2 mile marathon were
selected for their beauty and
accessibility.
The new Uplands Wellness Center was
overflowing with Uplands Village and area
residents, medical
professionals, current
and former Uplands
Board members and
manyother wellwishers for the Open
House and
Dedication
Ceremony on
Thursday, September 8.
The Wellness Center is a 31-bed facility that
provides Medicare-certified A & B skilled nursing
care and rehabilitation services. All rooms are
private and include bath, TV, phone, Wi-Fi and a
pull-out bed for those who want to stay with their
loved ones.
The Wellness Center features an occupational
therapy kitchen and bath designed to help stroke,
cardiac, major surgery and joint replacement
patients re-learn how to best navigate in their own
homes and maintain their highest levels of
independence. There is also a state-of-the-art
exercise facility for all Uplands Village residents,
and a physical, occupational and speech therapy
room for rehabilitative services.
Just like a marathon race,
this hiking marathon includes
26.2 miles of hiking trails in
Cumberland County. Unlike a
marathon race, it is not at all
competitive.
Participants have the whole
month of September to
complete the hiking marathon
route. Maps and trail
descriptions are provided and
there's a group leader for
each hike - including one of
the many experienced hikers
from Uplands!
Not up for the full marathon?
There's also the option of
completing 13.1 miles and
receiving recognition for
completing a half-marathon.
This event is free to enter and
successful marathoners are
awarded a T-shirt, certificate
and other prizes at the "Hit
the Trails" Festival in
October.
Shalom Center Offering
New Fall Courses
We're never too old to learn - or
to share our particular areas of
expertise and experience
garnered over a lifetime.
Passing on that knowledge is
Individual programs are also available for Uplands
residents requiring follow-up orthotic, cardiac,
stroke and pulmonary rehabilitation. A registered
dietitian develops menus based on each patient's
dietary requirements, and May's Café provides
freshly prepared meals and healthy snacks for both
patients and visitors.
After discharge from a hospital following major
surgery or acute healthcare event, the Wellness
Center is an excellent choice for those who still
require skilled nursing services, careful monitoring
on a daily basis, and rehabilitation therapies prior
to returning home. And it's especially convenient
for Uplands residents whose friends and spouses
can visit them easily and often!
The new Aquatic Therapy Center, which opened
earlier this year, is an important part of the Uplands
Wellness Center complex. It features a very warm,
shallow saltwater therapy pool for aquatic exercise
and rehabilitative therapies, with programs
conducted by certified aquatic therapists. Salt
water is much gentler on the skin because it
requires fewer chemicals than fresh water. It also
provides greater buoyancy, which helps those in
rehab to perform therapeutic exercises more
effectively.
The center also has a heated saltwater pool for lap
swimmers, and an 8-person hot tub for muscle
relaxation and circulation improvement. There are
several dressing rooms, including one designed for
caregivers to assist those who need help with
showering or dressing.

of Dr. May
Uplands was founded by Dr. May Cravath
one reason why the Shalom
Center for Continuing Education
was created.
Every semester at Uplands the
Shalom Center offers 6-week
"short courses" on a wide
variety of topics. Courses are
taught by residents, many of
them PhDs or practitioners who
have specialized in a particular
field during their careers, as
well as area experts with
extensive experience or
knowledge in a specific area.
How Buddhism Can Enrich
Christianity, Perspectives on
U.S. Women's
History and Philosophical
Concepts Considered are just
three of the courses being
offered this fall. Each course is
limited in size to allow for plenty
of class discussion and
questions.
One of the offerings, How to
Use an Android Smart Phone, is
being taught in the 16-station
computer lab at the newly-
Wharton, the "Doctor Woman of the
Cumberlands," who also founded what is now the
189-bed Cumberland Medical Center. The new
Uplands Wellness Center is built on the footprint of
Dr. May's original Wharton Nursing Home, which
she opened in 1957.
In his welcoming words to all those gathered for
the dedication, Uplands Executive Director Richard
Woodard said, "We are committed to continuing
Dr. May's legacy and to remaining a pioneer in the
delivery of quality health care." He noted that
several former Uplands Board members in
attendance this September were also present at the
dedication of the original Wharton Nursing Home
59 years ago!
In the words of Dr. May Wharton at the dedication
of the facility in 1957, "We again are mindful of
the countless hours of endeavor of the Board of
Directors, the Uplands Village staff, and
individuals in numerous walks of life who have
given their time, often without remuneration, and
their means to bring this building to completion.
We are deeply grateful for every gift of time and
talent and possessions."
Dr. May might not recognize all the services and
facilities that make up the Continuing Care
Retirement Community that Uplands Village is
today, but one thing is certain - she would know
that her legacy of superior and affordable health
care is alive and well at Uplands.
