A. PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
To assist the Works Coordinator in the effective and efficient delivery of
maintenance associated with Council’s fleet of vehicles, mobile plant and fixed
plant and equipment.
At times this role may also involve tasks within other work teams and it is
expected that the incumbent will undertake duties, as required.

 Diagnose faults and carry out remedial
treatment/repairs utilising appropriate work
practices, techniques, tools and equipment
 Ensure parts are available to complete servicing
and maintenance requirements in an efficient
and effective manner
 Ensure work is carried out in a safe environment
using safe work practices
 Compliance with workplace instructions

 Provide assurance of the quality of work
Provide a maintenance service
for all plant and equipment
using most cost effective means

Ensure a focus on customer

Regular plant maintenance and repairs promptly

Assist with the evaluation and road testing of
plant and equipment when requested
Maintain the mechanic workshop in a clean and
safe condition

Plant used as per manufacturer’s instructions and

Source parts as required
Attend offsite vehicle/plant breakdowns as and
when required (on occasions this may be outside
normal working hours)

C. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
Reporting relationships
The position reports to the Works Coordinator however daily direction will be
provided by the Workshop Supervisor.
The position of Mechanic/Diesel Fitter is not responsible for the supervision of any
other position however may provide assistance to the apprentice mechanic.

The incumbent will be expected to adopt a flexible approach to work requirements

E. KEY COMMUNICATIONS
Internal
This role has important relationships with other operation sections of the Infrastructure
& Works Department and Council and, as such, is required to ensure effective
working relationships are maintained at all times.
External
This role will have direct interaction with external customers, a high standard of
customer care must be maintained. The incumbent must promote a positive
approach to Council and its activities.

G. SELECTION CRITERIA
The following criteria are provided to assist in the identification of a potential
incumbent’s skills, knowledge and experience required for competent performance
in the position.
Essential Criteria
 Trade qualified – Mechanic/Diesel Fitter
 Previous experience with a wide range of vehicles and equipment including
small plant
 Experience in fundamentals of automotive electronics
 Welding skills
 Excellent team participation and interpersonal skills
 Demonstrated ability to impart knowledge and skills to others
 Demonstrated commitment to outstanding customer service
 Organise own work schedule to achieve designated team/section goals
 Consistently approach workload in a proactive fashion to ensure priorities and
deadlines are met, including the ongoing monitoring of maintenance
schedules
 Knowledge and application of safe work practices
 Possess current computing skills (standard office software) and ability to learn
relevant council programs
 Evidence of Medium Rigid Licence
 Evidence of Forklift Licence
 Current White Card (Work Safely in the Construction Industry)
 National Police Check
Desirable Criteria
 Heavy Rigid Licence
 Working knowledge of Council policies and procedures
 First aid certificate
 Ability to maintain and repair hydraulics
