Permit me to introduce
myself. My name is Steve
Weston and I was born and
raised in the Seattle area.
I went to college at Pacific
Lutheran University in
Tacoma, Washington,
majoring in math. After that
I served four years in the US
Air Force, the whole time stationed at a base
near San Antonio, Texas. From there I went to
Luther Seminary in St. Paul, where I met my
wife, Evelyn, who grew up in Hibbing. I was
ordained in 1993 and have previously served
parishes in the Northwestern and Southwestern
Minnesota Synods. Evelyn was ordained in
2002. This is my fourth time serving as an
interim pastor.
We have three sons: Sam (22), Ben (20), and
Jon (15). We currently reside in Babbitt, where
Evelyn is serving as pastor of a two-point parish
in Babbitt and Embarrass.
I've had a variety of hobbies and interests at
various times: chess, math, science, word and
logic puzzles, canoeing, sailing, tinkering with
computers and other electronic things, and most
recently writing hymns. I enjoy classical music
and literature, which I realize puts me out of the
mainstream of popular preferences.
Sometimes I miss the scenery of western
Washington where I grew up – evergreen forests,
mountains with glaciers, and water with tides –
but I've grown to love living in Minnesota. I
came to appreciate living in smaller communities
only after I graduated from seminary. Apart from
my internship year in an outer suburb of Omaha,
I had never lived in a metropolitan area of less
than a million people when we moved to my
first call, a two-point parish in far northwestern
Minnesota.
Your council has, on your behalf, contracted
with me to be your interim pastor while this
congregation goes through a process of
discernment in preparation for calling a new
pastor. My role as your interim pastor, besides
taking care of routine matters of worship,
confirmation classes, visitation, etc., will be to
help you folks make the best possible transition
to the next phase of your ministry.
Part of my role, too, is to not be a candidate for
the call. There are three very good reasons for
this. First, the emotional processes of getting
used to your former pastors no longer being
present, and of adjusting to your new pastoral
staff both happen best if they’re not happening
at the same time. Second, an interim pastor’s job
occasionally requires asking hard questions,
touching on touchy subjects, and ruffling feathers that need to be ruffled, which would be hard
for me to do if I’m thinking of the interim as a
tryout period. Third, it’s unlikely that the pastor
you randomly get to serve you during the interim
is really the best candidate for your congregation, but the interim pastor would have an unfair
advantage over other candidates. For these
reasons, I can serve you best by serving you
temporarily.
If you want to be in touch with me at any time,
my cell phone number is 218-404-5914, and my
email address is [email protected]. My
cell phone plan has unlimited talk and text, so
don’t worry about how many minutes your call
might cost me.
This is an exciting time for United in Christ
Lutheran Church, and perhaps a time of some
tension and anxiety as well. I look forward to
walking with you as you move ahead into the
future God has in store for you.
Peace and blessings!
Pastor Steve Weston

MESSAGE FROM
THE HEALTH
MINISTRY
COMMITTEE
July 2015
affects only the outer layer of the skin. UVA,
while less intense than UVB, is 30 to 50 times
more prevalent than UVB and penetrates to
deeper layers of the skin. UVA is the dominant
tanning ray and is closely linked to skin aging. It
also damages skin DNA and causes skin cancer.
The "broad spectrum" designation carries a lot
less specific information about UVA protection
than the zero-to-four-star system the FDA
originally proposed in 2007. But the FDA finally
decided only to insist that UVA protection must
increase as the SPF value goes up.
New Information on Sunscreen Labels
FDA Announced New Sunscreen
Rules 'Broad Spectrum' Means
UVA Plus UVB Protection
By Daniel J. DeNoon
Reviewed by Louise Chang, MD

Sunscreen labels are carrying a "broad spectrum"
label to show they offer some protection against
UVA radiation as well as UVB radiation,
according to a long-awaited new rule from the
FDA.
This is a very significant. The FDA has
announced major changes in how sunscreens are
regulated in the U.S.," Janet Woodcock, MD,
director of the FDA center for drug evaluation,
said at a news conference. "This allows people
to make better decisions and better protect
themselves from sun-induced damage."
Some products labeled as "broad spectrum" may
or may not protect against UVA. The new rule
reserving the "broad spectrum" claim only for
products that protect against UVA and UVB
took effect the summer of 2012. The old "SPF"
designation still will show how well a product
protects against UVB rays. But products with
the new "broad spectrum" label will have to pass
a test showing that they protect against UVA,
too. The higher the SPF level on these broadspectrum sunscreens -- up to SPF 50 -- the better
they protect against both UVA and UVB.
UVB radiation is responsible for sunburn and
plays a major role in causing skin cancer. It
Also new to sunscreen labels is a clear message
stating how long water-resistant sunscreens
maintain protection after a person swims or
sweats. Labels specify either 40 or 80 minutes of
protection. Those that aren't water resistant will
have to carry a warning to that effect.
Sunscreen Alone Isn't Enough
Sunscreens alone are not enough to prevent skin
cancer. In addition to sunscreen, it is
recommended that people who go outdoors wear
protective clothing and sunglasses and to seek
shade whenever possible. And there is a strong
warning against the use of tanning beds.
The next scheduled blood
drive will be held at the
church on Mon., July 20,
from 2:00 until 6:00 p.m.
If you are willing and
available to give blood,
please call Bonnie Keller
and volunteer at 744-2875.
Thanks in advance for
helping save someone’s
life with your donation
of blood. All types of blood needed! What a
wonderful gift to give. The gift of life to
someone struggling with a major health issue.
Remember, there is no substitute for blood!
