a) ___________ is a typical Slovenian festive dish known all around the world. In the past
it was baked in special baking dishes which reflected the local folks’ genuine creativity.
There are at least fifty recognized variants, which differ according to the filling: the
original filling was made with walnuts, hazelnuts, honey, peppermint, cottage cheese, sour
cream, cracklings, bacon or dried fruit. The typical dough is made from wheat flour,
rolled out flat, and spread over with the filling.
b) A typical Easter dish from central Slovenia and Primorska is the ____________. Made
of dried turnip peels, it evokes the memory of a time of severe famine during Easter in
1529.
c) __________ is a traditional Dalmatian and Istrian Easter sweet roll. It is also popular
in the Slovenian Littoral, western Croatia and parts of Trieste. It takes the form of a sweet
bread loaf with a sign of the cross, which is carved into the loaf with a knife before baking,
on the upper side. Containing a large number of eggs, it is eaten to celebrate the end of
Lent. Together with Easter eggs, it has remained the centerpiece of the typical family
Easter breakfast.
3) What are the names of these religious holidays in Slovene? Ash Wednesday? Lent? Palm Sunday?
Maundy Thursday? Good Friday?
