Targeting Jews: Govt. policy 1935: Nazis pass Nuremburg laws German citizenship revoked, no intermarriages, only certain jobs could be had A murder over Nazi policy towards Jews started Kristallnacht in 1938 Times getting Grim After Kristallnacht, many Jews see the writing on the wall Attempt to leave Germany, but are stopped by many countries Hitler’s next step is to separate the Jewish pop.. He puts them in Ghettos He deliberately made conditions bad enough to kill the weakest off. The Final Solution Hitler’s plan to “purify” the Aryan race Genocide against all non-Aryans, Roma, Poles, Russians, insane, Homosexuals, and Jews Death camps were set up all through the occupied areas All victims were put through the “showers”, which were designed to gas the victims. These camps could kill 6,000 people per day/per camp The Final numbers The War against Germany turns The U.S. in Europe by ’42 Stalin pushes for the west to start a two front war The British and Americans start their offensive against the Nazis in N. Africa Montgomery defeats Rommel in El Alamein Eisenhower traps Rommel in Tunis The Afrika Korps are forced to surrender by May of 1943 The Soviet Union “gits ‘er dun” After the Germans are stopped in Leningrad and Moscow They go south to Stalingrad By Nov. of ’42, the Nazi’s controlled 90% of the city Then winter hit; the Soviets counterattacked Germans trapped in the city w/no supplies They surrendered by Feb. of ‘43 The road towards Germany 1943 saw the Allies focus in on Italy Sicily was taken by 7/43 Mussolini removed from power and Italy surrendered. However, the Nazis took N. Italy and continued the fight The Allies took Rome in the summer of ’44 Mussolini was found in April of ’45 in Milan and was hung in a public square The Home Front WWII was a total war experience Particularly in the U.S., industry was working triple time to produce war equipment. All citizens at home were involved Propaganda was running big in all countries. Protests against war were never tolerated Many groups in Allied countries lost their civil rights. Ex. The Japanese Americans and intern camps throughout the western U.S. The last gasp for Germany In the west, two big battles sunk Germany D-Day in June of ’44 starts the Liberation of France The Battle of the Bulge in Dec. of ’44 was the Germans last attempt to break through the British and Americans The Soviets were able to get to Berlin first and pound the capital w/artilery Germany surrendered in April of ‘45 Japan gets desperate Americans get the Philippines back in the fall of ’44 During the Philippines fight, Japan risked its entire Naval fleet to stop the U.S., and lost Now, they only had their air force and army to fight In April and June of ’45, the Americans moved into Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Tokyo was being bombed every minute of the day When will these guys quit? Japan gave the U.S. many challenges Samurai spirit of “no surrender” The Navy had to battle kamikazes, etc. An invasion of Japan looked costly The Manhattan Project Newly sworn in President Truman learned of the Atomic Bomb The decision was made to drop the bomb rather than lose hundreds of thousands in an invasion Hiroshima was bombed on 8/6/45 Nagasaki on 8/9/45 Japan announced its intention to surrender two days later. It was official on 9/2/45
