Capacity expansion and equipment modernization
to ensure business continuity of IT services
The company Elektrovojvodina had a need to modernize the existing Data Center and to add a new server and backup equipment.
All data on subscribers who are covered by the information system (energy consumption, bills...) are stored in the Data Center and
collected from all branches from the territory of Vojvodina. This
indicates the importance of the Data Center. In cooperation with
consortium partner, Enel PS, Saga has modernized and increased
the capacity of the primary Data Center, thereby ensuring smooth
operations of Elektrovojvodina in the future period.

Solution
Server room has been renovated, new optimal sequence
of servers in the server room
has been set, server equipment has been expanded
(servers, storage and archiving devices), connecting of
new equipment with existing
equipment in the Data Center
has been done, as well as the
new air conditioning, ventilation and monitoring system,
also UPS has been installed,
as well as a diesel generator
for uninterrupted power of
Data Center.

Elektrovojvodina is a company for electricity distribution
and distribution system management on the territory of
the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina. It was established by combining multiple utility power distribution
companies and it operates within Elektroprivreda Srbije.

Solution
Upgrade and modernization of the primary Elektrovojvodina Data Center is a complex project that was carried
out in several steps. The engineers from Elektrovojvodina made a project solution that comprised a number
of operations. Firstly, the server room was completely
renovated in order to achieve optimal conditions for the
operation of enhanced server equipment. This included
the installation of new air conditioning systems, ventilation and uninterrupted power supply. This preliminary
work was the responsibility of Saga’s consortium partner - Enel PS.

In-Row cooling system with horizontal air circulation
without the use of raised floor is applied. The main feature
of the In-Row system is targeted cooling and elimination
of hot and cold air mixing. This increases the efficiency
of the system and isolates the hot zones without uneven
cooling. Another great advantage of this cooling system
is the lack of condensation, or at least, it occurs only in
trace, which is of the utmost importance for the conditions that must exist in the server room. The existing air
conditioning system was also kept as a backup option.
In accordance with the Data Center expansion, the existing UPS devices in the server room are enhanced in
order to ensure uninterrupted supply of the server and
storage equipment for a minimum of 25 minutes, which
is enough time to start the generator that will then take
over the power supply of the equipment. A new dieselelectric generator scaled in a way that it can provide 15
hours of operation at a load of 80 %, i.e., provide a minimum of 12 hours of operation at full load was installed in
the courtyard of Elektrovojvodina.
After these preparations, Saga set up and configured
new servers in the Data Center that are connected with
the existing servers. VMware virtualization system is installed and implemented on the new equipment. After
that, Saga’s engineers installed and connected storage
devices with the rest of the new system. A Host Integration was implemented - a set of procedures that allow
allocation of the storage partition and connection with
Blade servers. After that EMC RecoverPoint was installed
- a system for local and remote data replication, which is
composed of two dedicated devices. Then, zoning and
customization of the storage system was made, in order
to perform its function in the most effective way. In the
end, EMC NetWorker backup was installed and configured - the software that is responsible for copying data
to the EMC Data Domain deduplication server.

Benefits
With the implementation of new servers and by connecting them with existing, Saga has modernized and
expanded Data Center of Elektrovojvodina. By setting a
new backup system, level of security and safety of important customer data is increased. New air conditioning in
the Data Center, as well as generators, provide optimum
and continuous operation even in the event of a major
power system breakdown, while maintaining the consistency of data.
Result
The new Data Center on a primary location is in the same
system hall as the existing one, so that it represents in the
physical sense expansion and upgrade of the existing one.
In a logical sense, servers, switches and storage systems
are the new core of the SAN (Storage Area Network) infrastructure, in which all important data and services are
centralized. However, the most important result of this
project is the satisfaction of Elektrovojvodina customers.
