COMMUNITY MEETING
Cheam received a letter offering compensation regarding the
Specific Claim of Canada’s role with the Canadian National
Railway (CNR) on July 5, 2012. Canada is offering $515,472 to
settle this outstanding specific claim. Council requested a legal
analysis of the compensation off by JFK Law firm. JFK
recommended:
It is our recommendation that Cheam accept the Offer
given the information that exists at this date, size of the
Offer, and the strength of the claim given the historic
information that is available.
The Cheam First Nation had until December 31, 2012 to either
accept or decline the offer.
A community meeting regarding the Specific Claim Settlement was
held December 5, 2012. To try to reach as many community
members as possible, notices were sent via newsletter, website and
there was a mail-out done. Representatives from JFK Law were
there to present information and take questions from the floor; two
Council members were present. Twenty three community members
were present; the majority voted to accept the offer.
