“I needed to get my life together”
For nearly eight years, there
wasn’t a day where Jesús didn’t drink
alcohol. Not one.
He’d wake up in the mornings,
exhausted and sick, but just couldn’t
imagine giving up his addiction. “I
didn’t care,” he says. “Not about my
future, or myself.”
It took a close friend being
diagnosed with cancer to make him
start thinking about his future -- and
his problem with alcohol. “I realized
my life was messed up,” he says.
“I was living for myself, but also,
against myself.”
Then, he discovered the Men’s
Recovery Program at the Bay Area
Rescue Mission. Right away, Jesús
felt he’d found the help he needed to
make big changes. “I knew I needed
to get my life together.”
Jesús had never thought much
about making God a part of his
life. But he was touched by the
encouragement of our staff, who

Jesús joined our long-term

help men not only recover from

Jesús recently got his GED and

Jesús now has dreams of starting

He knows that all the positive

they gave me the motivation and

A Home for the
Holidays
The holidays are so close! If your
home is anything like mine, the
refrigerator is full, decorations
are coming out of storage and
excitement about seeing family
and friends is building.
At the Rescue Mission,
thousands of men, women and
children will spend the holiday
season with us. They don’t have
homes to decorate, or money for
gifts. Many don’t have family or
friends in their lives.
But thanks to you, these hurting
people will not be alone this
holiday season.
Your support, and your kindness
to others, provides hot meals, a
safe place to sleep and recovery
programs with the power to
change lives. When I talk to the
men and women here, they’re
incredibly grateful. “I didn’t know
where else to go” or “No one
would help me,” or simply “Thank
God you’re here.”
I thank God that “you’re here”
for the Rescue Mission. We never
know what the holidays will bring,
or how we may touch a person’s
heart with a simple holiday meal
and a cheerful smile. Please help
us reach out to our family, the
poor and the hurting, this holiday
season.

At the end of 2014, we’re thankful
to all those who have helped us reach
over $1,000,000!
In the last few months, the
thermometer has been climbing toward
our goal of $6,000,000 to build our new
Center for women and children.
The Center will be a refuge for those
experiencing homelessness, domestic
abuse or poverty.
Some women
may only stay
a few nights...
some will stay longer. Others will choose
to join our long-term recovery program
and transform their lives.
Whatever their needs, our Center

“Hungry,
cold & in
desperate
need…”
When Maryum was laid off from
work several years ago, she found herself
slipping into unhealthy relationships and
behaviors – and drug use. “I was almost
at the point of not being able to recover
because my behavior was so out of hand.”
Then, Maryum lost everything when
her house burned down. Too proud
to ask her family for help, she became
homeless. “I lived on the streets. My only
source of shelter was sleeping in wash
houses or in parks.”
There’s much to be thankful for
at the end of 2014. But there’s still
more to do before we’re ready to break
ground on this new home for women
and children.

He’s sitting alone at a big table...
His face is tired and
careworn. His eyes are
downcast. It’s Thanksgiving
day, and he’s alone. Now,
watch his face as you
approach the table.
You wish him a “Happy
Thanksgiving,” and put down a heaping
plate of turkey with a pile of mashed
potatoes and dressing smothered in
gravy in front of him.
“We’re so glad you could join us
today,” you say. “It’s great to have you
here for Thanksgiving.”
He looks up and smiles...perhaps for
the first time in weeks. Then, so quietly that
you lean in to hear, he says, “Thank you.”
As a member of our Rescue Mission
family, you bring fresh smiles to the
faces of thousands of people. You make
those who are homeless feel welcome.
You fill those who are hungry with more
than food.
Each time a meal is served, each
time a homeless person sleeps in
a warm bed, each time prayers are
offered up in chapel, it’s because
you’re part of a family that cares for
those who are lost, hurting and alone.
Thank you for all you do!
During her time on the streets,
Maryum reflected on her situation – and
herself. “I saw my life flashing before
me. In those troubled moments, I felt so
much despair.”
Desperate to find shelter, Maryum
finally called the Bay Area Rescue
Mission. “They offered me a bed! I got on
a bus and came right here.”
“After being hungry, cold and in
desperate need of warm clothes, I was so
grateful,” Maryum remembers. “I showed
up just in time to eat dinner. I was so
happy to get a hot meal and settle
down for the night.”
Maryum eventually joined our
Women’s Recovery Program, designed
to help women heal from the inside out
through classes, work therapy and oneon-one counseling.
“The staff is wonderful. Their love
and compassion for the residents here is
so great.”
Our staff offered Maryum spiritual
encouragement, too. “I was saved before
I came here, but I didn’t have a real
relationship with the Lord,” she says. “The
Bible studies here helped me so much.”
Maryum also served as part of the
Culinary Arts team in our kitchen, where
she discovered a new passion for cooking
for people in need – a passion she plans
to turn into a career!
Today, Maryum is a graduate of our
program and working on her GED.
She’s also preparing to go to college for a
degree in Hospitality.
Through it all, she thanks God for
leading her here. “If God hadn’t saved
me in the timely fashion that He did,
I would’ve never recovered from life’s
challenges.”
And Maryum knows that your
support has helped make her journey
from homeless to hopeful possible. “The
donors make such a difference…when I
see the daily arrivals of boxes of food in
the kitchen, it just shows me how all God’s
people care and work together for good.”
