A method for determining viable cell number of aerobic bacteria which comprises placing a
water-insoluble pyridinium type resin layer (3) on the sensing portion of an oxygen-sensing electrode
(2), subjecting an aqueous bacteria-containing sample to be in contact with the water-insoluble
pyridinium type resin layer, and determining the viable cell number of aerobic bacteria in the sample on
the basis of an output of the oxygen-sensing electrode detected upon the contact of the sample with the
pyridinium type resin layer, and an apparatus suitable for effecting the above method.
