This trend changes the means and ways of career development. The values of portable skills that can be productive independent from a specific organization or location tend to become more appreciated by those who are willing to experience different jobs and training. Meanwhile, higher skilled occupations have become even more professional and sophisticated in the current ever-changing technological environment. To be successful in one’s career, we ought to update our skills constantly while knowing facts and trends in demands in occupations and in skills in need for such occupations. This lecture first introduces the recent trend in the mobility of workers and students in the globalized economy. We then investigate changes in needs and demands in occupations, skills and training/education. We will review economic theories that explain the global mobility of skilled individuals and highly trained students, and the impact of such mobility on economy, organizations as well as the process of career development. Our investigation will include both quantitative and qualitative studies by using statistical data as well as case studies from actual employment settings. Important objective of this course includes to explore what these recent trends in labor market and skill development implies to us all. We will attempt to apply what we would have learned in this class to our own plan for career development.
