RadMax® Technology
RadMax Rotary Cycle
Up to 12 vanes slide axially through the rotating
rotor as they follow machined cams in the ends of
the stationary stator housing. Chambers form at
both sides of the rotor between the rotor, stator
walls and vanes. The chamber volume changes as
the vane follows along the cam profile during
rotor rotation creating up to 24 compression or
expansion events per revolution. This results in up
to 48 compression, expansion, pumping, or any
combination of such events per rotation. Desired
device configuration is accomplished through the
flexible placement of simple intake and exhaust
ports in the cam.

IC Engine Extended Expansion Cycle
A larger expansion than compression volume is possible in a
RadMax® internal combustion engine which can result in increased
engine efficiency of 10 – 15% over comparable hp piston engines!
RadMax engines are able
to accommodate a
greater expansion volume
(Ve) than compression
volume (Vc). This results
in more work being
extracted from the
expanding gases and
increased engine
efficiency and fuel
economy.

RadMax Compressor
A RadMax positive displacement compressor incorporates
the advantages of both positive displacement and
centrifugal compressors by utilizing the volumetric energy of
a positive-displacement compressor and the kinetic energy
of a centrifugal compressor to pressurize a gas. This results in
an exceptionally energy efficient device.
Key Advantages:
•
•
•
•
Able to efficiently compress low density gases and can
better handle entrained liquids in gas
High internal compression ratios possible (20:1)
High volume output to size ratio
Scalable from small to very large devices
Applications:
Compressing refrigerants for industrial, commercial,
residential and automotive air conditioning systems;
industrial gas compressing; natural gas field and pipeline gas
compression; low density gas to high pressure

RadMax Gas Expander
In principle, gas expansion is compression running in reverse.
Unlike turboexpanders, a positive displacement RadMax gas
expander is able to capture and convert both kinetic and
pressure-volume energy in gas expansion applications.
Key Advantages:
• Able to efficiently expand low density gases
and can better handle gas entrained liquids
• High internal and potential automatic
variable expansion ratios possible (20:1)
• Higher work efficiency at lower speed
• Scalable from small to very large devices
Applications:
Prime mover (standalone & in turbine engine);
natural gas throttling energy recovery (pipeline
distribution & compressing stations); air conditioning
systems throttling energy recovery; waste energy
recovery; power generation

RadMax Pump
The RadMax positive displacement pump pairs the
high volume capacity of positive displacement pump
with the simplicity and efficiency of a centrifugal
pump. A RadMax pump is able to utilize the
volumetric displacement energy of the fluid and the
kinetic energy of the vane action. This results in an
extraordinarily energy efficient pump.
Key Advantages:
•
•
•
•
•
Multiple smooth pumping actions per
rotation creates high output volume to size
and weight ratios
Better handling of gas-entrained liquids
Self priming & auto re-priming
Can operate as a boost or lift pump
Scalability from small to very large devices
Applications:
Fire Protection, Flood Control, Irrigation, Marine,
Water Treatment, Oil & Gas, Industrial Processes

Advantages
• Increased design flexibility and functionality
• Compact size with high performance
• Reduced size, weight, parts count and cost
• Rapid field change-out capability
• Scalable from small to very large devices
Compressor
A RadMax technology device is comprised of two cams connected by a
common driveshaft in a single housing. By using separate vane actuator
systems, each cam can have a different compression or expansion ratio
making it possible to have two separately functioning cam cycles (i.e.
engine, pump, compressor, or gas expander) in the same device.
Applications
Applications with limited space and weight restrictions such as auxiliary and
backup power generation, waste heat recovery, portable pumps,
compressors and generators, and gas system throttling loss recovery.

Applications
Natural Gas Compressor Station Energy Recovery
•
As well productivity declines reciprocating compressors lose sufficient suction and stall. Gas must be
recirculated at each compression stage to maintain minimum required suction to the compressor to insure
proper operation. Solution is to recycle gas; very inefficient and expensive in terms of loss revenue.
•
Typical pressure reduction valves used in the recirculation circuits can not capture stored energy in the
high pressure gas stream.
•
RadMax gas expander and generator can potentially capture 20% of lost energy and convert to electricity.
•
Expanded gas can also be used to augment inter-stage cooling.
