Maestro External Keyboard

Maestro External Keyboard
(Pocketop Original) User’s Guide
1. Welcome
Maestro version 1.0.1 supports the Pocketop Original keyboard. Communicate with your
Maestro PDA without the hassle of cumbersome wires and adapters. Our Wireless PDA
Keyboard uses universal dual-beam infrared technology, making it compatible with most
Pocket PC devices on the market. Now you can input data quickly and conveniently
anywhere and anytime. Maestro version 1.0.1 gives you full access and control of your
PDA with the external Pocketop keyboard. You can alternately use the tactile keyboard
or the Pocketop keyboard without having to quit the active Maestro application.
2. Software configuration
Maestro version 1.0.1 includes the Pocketop driver, as well as its appropriate settings. Do
not use the CD included with your keyboard to install the factory driver. Instead, use the
Keyboard dialog box in the Maestro Configuration Panel to enable and configure your
external keyboard.
3. Setting up the Pocketop keyboard
3.1
Opening the keyboard
Hold the folded PDA keyboard upwards and press the two release buttons located on both
upper corners. The keyboard will open like a book.
3.2
Installing the Battery
Open the battery compartment located on top of the keyboard by lifting the latch above
the key that corresponds to the letter r. Insert one AAA battery. Close the battery
compartment ensuring that the black pullout tape is tucked into the battery compartment.
Important Tip: Only use AAA alkaline batteries. Do not use manganese batteries. The
battery included with the keyboard is non-rechargeable.
3.3
Infrared (IR) Transmittal
Your Pocketop infrared keyboard communicates with your Maestro PDA through IR
(Infrared). Using Dual-beam infrared technology to communicate with your PDA, this
innovation lets you input data to your PDA without physically attaching it to the
Keyboard. To function properly, the two infrared ports need to face each other.
Infrared refers to light waves of a frequency lower than what human eyes can receive and
interpret. Infrared is used in most television remote control systems, and uses a standard
called irDA (Infrared Data Association). It is used to connect some computers with peripheral
devices. In most cases, infrared is used in a digital mode -- the signal is pulsed on and off
very quickly to send data from one point to another.
The one-to-one nature of infrared communications is useful in that you can make sure a
message only reaches the intended recipient, even in a room full of infrared receivers.
3.4
Connecting the Pocketop keyboard
On the HP iPAQ 4150, the Infrared (IR) port is located on the bottom edge of the PDA,
to the left of the Charging/Communications Port. On the Dell Axim X50, the Infrared
(IR) port is located on the top edge of the PDA, above the SD slot.
To use Maestro with your external keyboard, turn your Maestro PDA on and make sure
that a Maestro application is running. The keyboard should be positioned approximately
4-6 inches from the Infrared port of the PDA. As communication is by line of sight, you
may need to position the PDA slightly left of centre of the keyboard. Your external
keyboard should connect automatically with your Maestro PDA. If it does not, be sure to
align the IR ports properly. The Pocketop keyboard is activated by default. The status of
the external keyboard is accessible on the system bar of your Maestro PDA. If the
Pocketop keyboard is not enabled, open the Maestro configuration panel and select the
Keyboard settings. While browsing the list, you will hear the name of supported
keyboards and their connection status. The selected keyboard can be enabled or disabled.
Select the Pocketop keyboard from the list. If it’s disabled, press Tab to select the
Enable/Disable external keyboard button. Press Validate to enable the selected external
keyboard.
4. Using the Pocketop keyboard with Maestro.
While using Maestro, you can alternately use either the tactile keyboard or the Pocketop
keyboard without having to quit the active Maestro application. Please refer to the
Maestro User’s guide, or the Quick reference guide for a complete list of commands. The
Tell and Spell keys are not present on the Pocketop keyboard. Those functions have been
mapped on other Pocketop key combinations, see section 4.3 for more details.

5. Important Tips:
Before folding the keyboard, you should turn the Maestro PDA off or remove it from the
IR port’s line of sight. Not doing so may cause the PDA to “freeze” as the keys are
depressed during the folding process. Should the PDA freeze, please perform a soft reset
to restart it.
Intense Light
Your Maestro PDA’s receiving port is very sensitive to light. Direct sunlight or other
intense light may impair the reception of IR transmissions. This could cause the keyboard
to appear as if it’s not transmitting. It may be necessary to re-orient your Maestro PDA
and keyboard in order to re-establish communication.
