As the Chairman of the Board of Management of STEAG GmbH,
I am delighted to congratulate STEAG Power Minerals on its 35th
anniversary. The people at STEAG Power Minerals in Dinslaken
play an important role adding value to the parent company, in
that they contribute to the smooth and efficient operation of our
power plants by the safe and environmentally sound recycling of
the power plant by-products in accordance with the law.
As you will see on the following pages, STEAG Power Minerals
is however much more than just a link in the value chain of
STEAG. We are proud to have STEAG Power Minerals in our
group of companies as a European market and expertise leader.
On increasingly globalized markets, STEAG Power Minerals, with
its experience as a problem solver, also performs an important
scouting function for STEAG beyond the borders of Germany
– and we as the parent company of course also benefit from its
experience on international markets.
What particularly distinguishes STEAG Power Minerals in my
view is the fact that the company, in spite of its expansion and
the successful establishment of its own group of companies, has
retained the medium-sized virtues which shaped its character
from the start. STEAG Power Minerals relies on long-term
partnerships in confidence and trust, on customer orientation,
on innovation and strong networks – virtues, then, which are
all the more remarkable in these times of ever faster market
developments.
The fact that STEAG Power Minerals is not only an expertise
leader, but also a leader in innovation, is shown for example
by the successful market launch of the concrete additive
Photoment®, which, with its air cleaning properties, can significantly improve the quality of life in German inner cities. This
additive has been presented to the public at the ‘Pollution
Reduction Forum’ in the innovation city of Bottrop, an event
drawing national attention at which STEAG Power Minerals will
prove that it is by no means shirking its responsibility as a company for society as a whole.
On behalf of the Board of Management of STEAG GmbH, I
should like to thank the committed and enthusiastic staff of
STEAG Power Minerals for their outstanding work within the
Group, and wish the company many further years of successful,
responsible and sustainable business.

History
The history of our parent company goes even further
back: Steinkohlen-Elektrizität-AG – STEAG for short –
was founded on September 20, 1937 in Lünen. STEAG
was one of the first companies to exploit the progress
which had been made at the time in high pressure technology for electricity generation from hard coal. In doing
so, STEAG took on the might of the large brown coal fired
power plants and rapidly became the decisive force on
the growing energy market of the Ruhr.
The dynamic development of STEAG Power Minerals began in
1979. As a STEAG subsidiary, then trading under the name of
STEAG Entsorgungs-GmbH (SEG), the newly founded company
was to develop recycling techniques for power plant by-products
and operate treatment plants.
STEAG has been operating the Lünen power plant since as early as 1938. Today,
the two units of the plant have a total generating capacity of 507 megawatts
Becoming an expertise leader
In 1981, SEG also took on the marketing of the power plant
by-products – and in that way the first company to offer all disposal
and recycling services from under one roof all year round was created.
In addition, SEG stood at an early stage for expert technical
advice and support to customers from the power generation and
construction materials industries, continued to develop its technical
facilities and took on an active role on committees and in
associations. The development was always centered on customerorientation – STEAG Power Minerals has always regarded itself

first and foremost as a partner to industry and the construction
trade, and as a problem solver with individual concepts for every
customer.
In order to adopt a pioneering role in technology, too,
STEAG Power Minerals developed step by step into a leading force
in research and development: At our own Construction Materials
and Fuels Laboratory in Gladbeck, our highly qualified staff
are able to offer a broad spectrum of possibilities in research,
development and testing. In this way, for example, the
photocatalytically active concrete additive Photoment®, which we
are presenting in greater detail on page 26 of this SEGMENT
issue, was created.
The history of STEAG Power Minerals
Global leader with
regional roots
The success story of STEAG Power Minerals started in the late 1970s. From its
early days as the waste disposal subsidiary STEAG Entsorgungs-GmbH, the
company developed into one of the leading international full service providers for the
construction materials industry without ever forgetting its roots in the Rhine-Ruhr
region. A brief summary of the company’s 35 year history is presented here.

The product range was constantly extended in the following
decades. With the best secured sources of raw materials in
the industry, STEAG Power Minerals supplies fly ash, flue gas
desulfurization gypsum, bottom ash and other high quality materials
to the construction materials industry. Following the merger with
ASIKOS GmbH in 2011, STEAG Power Minerals is now also one
of the market leaders in the supply of blasting abrasives and
industrial minerals.
“STEAG Power Minerals is an essential link in STEAG’s
value chain. In both waste disposal and recycling of
the by-products of our power plants we depend on the
outstanding market knowledge, expertise and reliability of
STEAG Power Minerals. My warmest congratulations on
your 35th company anniversary!“

Outstanding infrastructure
Right from the start, it was considered essential to establish and
develop a well-functioning infrastructure: SEG invested in plant

for conditioning and interim storage of the by-products, in silos
and in logistics for rail and waterway transport. The company
even erected its own sand-lime brick works and a redrying
plant which is unique in Europe. Services were offered not only
to STEAG, but also to other power plant operators – with an
excellent response. In the following period, the company entered into disposal contracts with almost all the German power
plant operators – and STEAG Power Minerals was also able to
position itself on the market in other European countries through
international subsidiaries.
Unique in Europe: the fly ash re-drying plant at the Lünen site
In that context of growth, it was especially important to the
management of STEAG Power Minerals to hold fast to the
traditional virtues and values of medium sized enterprises from its
founding years. Managing Director Andreas Hugot emphasizes,
“We regard ourselves as a learning enterprise, have our principles,
and adhere to them in all our work.”
Excellent future prospects
While SEG, in its first year of business, achieved around 18 million
euros in sales with a staff of 46 people, STEAG Power Minerals
now employs 100 people and has sales of around 75 million euros.
Each year, we recycle around 3 million metric tons of residues
– making the company the clear market leader for residue
recycling in Germany. Long-term contracts provide us with
secure access to our raw materials, and with its large network
of partners in the power generation and construction industries
and its globally unique know-how, STEAG Power Minerals is also
optimally positioned for the future.

A relaxing celebration in a special setting
On 3 July 2014, past and present staff of STEAG Power Minerals
celebrated their company’s 35th anniversary together. In the best

Don’t those very values threaten the
processes of internationalization
and expansion which you have
addressed?
Rath: No, I don’t see any risk for
STEAG Power Minerals there. In all
processes of transformation and expansion,
we have always made it our principle to
preserve the original virtues of a mediumsized business as entrepreneurial and also
moral guidelines. Short decision-making
paths, a high level of customer orientation,
clear principles and values, innovative
power and involvement of employees in
decision-making processes – all that is what
shapes STEAG Power Minerals, and will
continue to do so in future.
POWER MINERALS
Uwe Rath (left) and Andreas Hugot are the Managing Directors of STEAG Power Minerals
You mention innovation. What role
do you think innovative products and
solution play?
“Trust is the foundation stone of success”
Since the company’s foundation 35 years ago, STEAG Power Minerals has developed from
a pure waste disposal business into an international full service provider for industry and the
construction trade. We spoke to the directors of the Dinslaken-based company about strategies, values and future prospects, and about what STEAG Power Minerals means to them.
Mr. Hugot, STEAG Power Minerals
recently celebrated the 35th anniversary of its foundation. Do you
regard any single factor as being
decisive for the company’s success?
Hugot: One thing which has been and
always will be decisive for our success
is the fact that we always regard our
partner businesses as real partners in
the best sense of the word. We work
together with the power plant operators,
our logistics partners and our customers
in the construction materials industry in
an atmosphere of confidence and trust,
and have in most cases done so for
decades now. We attach great
importance to transparency, rapid
and personal support, and maximum
customer orientation in all the areas
of the company. That is the foundation
stone
on
which
the
success
of STEAG Power Minerals is based.
Mr. Rath, have there been any
developments within the Group of
10
companies in recent years which
favorably surprised you?
Rath: I am especially pleased that our
subsidiaries in other European countries
have developed so well. All our subsidiaries
have firmly established themselves on
their national markets and exhibited
sustainable growth, and will certainly
continue along that path. This shows
us that it was the right decision not only
to concentrate on our highly important
existing business in Germany, but also to
expand our business abroad and position ourselves as an international Group.
Hugot: It has always been our ambition
for ourselves to be as complete a partner to the power generation and construction industries as possible, offering
tailor-made solutions for any problem
our customers may have. In this all-encompassing approach, our subsidiaries
in particular play a central role, as on the
one hand they provide us with access to
regional domestic and foreign markets,
and on the other hand they retain specialist expertise within the enterprise.
Hugot: We will continue in that direction
in future, both in Europe and beyond.
That will also enable us to react flexibly
to the long-term changes on the German
energy market and to secure access to
our sources of raw materials in the long term.
Rath: That is one of the r asons why our
Gladbeck-based subsidiary MINERALplus
is so important to us – the expertise
of MINERALplus in the disposal and
recycling of industrial waste perfectly
rounds off our portfolio and makes us
a reliable partner who can provide an
all-round disposal and recycling concept
for every customer.
What role do the German and
European subsidiaries play in the overall
strategy of STEAG Power Minerals?
You have always emphasized that
STEAG Power Minerals regards
itself as a value-oriented business.
segment Extra
Hugot: Following several years of
development together withthe KRONOS
company,
we
recently
launched
Photoment®, an innovative concrete
additive for paving stones which
decomposes the toxic nitrogen oxides from
the air, on the market. It not only does
that, but also makes the paving
stones self-cleaning. Our
approach
here was once again to identify a
problem looking for a solution rather
than a potential product looking for an
application. Nitrogen oxide pollution
caused by traffic has increased
enormously in recent years. There is now
a need for measures to counteract this
health hazard. We are convinced that we
can make an important contribution to
solving that problem with Photoment®.
Photoment®is a highly innovative product. Fly ash, in contrast, has been
used in the concrete and cement industry for a long time. How important
is fly ash in your portfolio?
Hugot: Even if fly ash has been in use for
several decades, it has lost nothing of its
advantages. It is a high-quality concrete
additive which, for example, significantly
improves the strength of the concrete and
makes it denser, more resistant and more
durable. Accordingly, it continues to be an
important part of our portfolio.
Rath: And furthermore, the use of fly
ash helps to conserve natural resources.
By-products considered by some to be
worthless are used as valuable construction
materials. Fly ash can, for example, replace
highly CO2-intensive components in
concrete and cement. Almost a ton of
CO2 can be saved for every ton of fly ash.
STEAG Power Minerals also has
a broad range of products for
manufacturing industry and the
construction sector. What do you
expect the market will require in the
coming years?
Hugot: The business with power plant
by-products such as fly ash, gypsum and
bottom ash, and with blasting abrasives,
industrial minerals and lime is a very special
one. In the past decades, we and our
company have built up an extensive
store of expert knowledge concerning
the products and their handling. The
topic of security in disposal and supply
is of course also especially important in
this connection. We are conscious of our
responsibility for mastering the challenges
our customers face, and have positioned
ourselves accordingly. Together with a variety of depot and silo facilities, we also
have extensive transshipment facilities at
home and abroad.
our processes. In the past two years, we
have worked intensively on the optimization
of our structural and workflow organization
so as to be optimally equipped to fulfil
the increasingly complex demands of
the market. For us as a business, that
of course also means being ready for
continuous improvement and change.
These are the challenges we are facing
up to.
What do you wish the staff of STEAG
Power Minerals on their anniversary?
Hugot: I should quite simply like to say
thank you to all our employees who
put life into the corporate values of
STEAG Power Minerals on a daily basis,
and who are the most important
foundation stone in our continuing success!
Rath: Without the daily commitment of our
entire team, all of whom have completely
supported the processes of change in the
past few years, we would not be in the
strong position we are in today.
Mr. Hugot, Mr. Rath, thank you for
talking to us.

MINERALplus GmbH
STEAG Power Minerals group
MINERALplus GmbH
The perfect mixture
The silos of the MINERALplus construction material mixing plant form a striking landmark in the
industrial area of Gladbeck. This is where the STEAG Power Minerals subsidiary’s operations are
based. As the people in Gladbeck with their experience in industrial waste management perfectly
complemented the STEAG Power Minerals range of services, MINERALplus plays an important
role in the overall strategy. We present the company and its extensive services.
15 years ago, MINERALplus GmbH, based in Gladbeck, was
created out of a merger of four businesses. The company is a
specialist in the disposal and recycling of industrial waste – from
deposition at the company’s own problem waste landfill to the
production of special refuse-derived construction materials.
Specialists for mineral waste
In a modern construction materials mixing plant in Gladbeck,
MINERALplus processes mineral waste such as fly ash and reaction products from the flue gas treatment systems of waste
incineration plants into innovative construction materials which
are for the most part used as packing. The recovery of industrial
waste focuses on the recycling of combustion residues, sludges,
soils, rubble and production residues.
Investments and further locations
With a problem waste landfill in Troisdorf in the Rhineland, a viscous
slurry plant for mine cavern packing operated by affiliate Minex GmbH
in Stassfurt, and the waste analysis laboratory in Gladbeck,
the company has the best possible technical conditions and
capacities for waste management. The specialists at the Karlsruhe
branch support clients in southern Germany and the bordering
countries. Felix Höltken GmbH, a subsidiary of MINERALplus,
ensures smooth operation of the Troisdorf landfill. Höltken is also
a specialist for the manufacture and sale of recycled materials
from demolition projects, which are used in the greater Cologne
area for civil engineering and road building.
Research for optimized formulas
The staff at MINERALplus are available to assist their customers
in all matters of waste management concerning transport logistics,
collection systems, documentation, material flow management
and even questions of waste law. Furthermore, MINERALplus
employs a team of highly qualified specialists in its own waste
analysis laboratory, who perform extensive studies for quality
assurance purposes and also develop new formulas for special
applications.
The specialists at the waste laboratory continuously monitor the quality of the
products supplied by MINERALplus
3 questions to ...
... Günter Henkel and Detlef Heine, Directors of MINERALplus GmbH
Mr. Henkel, Mr. Heine, what do you
think is the greatest strength of
MINERALplus?
Henkel: Our greatest strength is
certainly our experienced, optimally trained
and extremely loyal staff, on whom the
company’s success is based. Without
that sound basis, the constant expansion
of our capacity and range of services
which we have achieved in recent years
would not have been possible.
What is it like to work together with your
colleagues at STEAG Power Minerals?
Heine: We work extremely closely together
with the people in Dinslaken, because
the range of services of MINERALplus
and STEAG Power Minerals perfectly
complement each other. Both companies
benefit enormously from the expertise and
market experience of the other.
Can you give us a brief outline of how
you intend to position MINERALplus
for the future?
Heine: Our strategy is clearly one of growth:
We want to manage a million tons of waste
in future, and dispose of 30% of it in our
own facilities. To achieve that, we plan to
strengthen and develop the three pillars of
our business – mine packing, landfills and
waste management.
Henkel: Above all, that means increasing
our packing capacity, extending our landfill in Troisdorf and expanding our trading
business by utilizing our own recycling
capacity. We are, then, facing the coming
years with a clear strategy, and looking
forward to the challenges of the future.
Unmistakable: The silos at the MINERALplus premises are a landmark of the Gladbeck industrial park

3 questions to ...
... Rainer Allmannsdörfer (EnBW AG),
Plant Manager, Stuttgart-Power Plant
Mr. Allmannsdörfer, EnBW and STEAG Power Minerals
have been engaged in a Joint Venture since 2010. How
did you find the start of the partnership?
In 2009, our company was looking for a strategic partner in the
field of recycling of power plant by-products. We conducted a host
of meetings with firms in the power generation and construction
materials industries – and found the partner we were looking for in
STEAG Power Minerals. In the foundation phase and during the
further development of our joint subsidiary, Powerment GmbH,
I found my colleagues at STEAG Power Minerals to be highly
competent, absolutely reliable negotiating partners whose word
was their bond – something that has sadly become rare these days.
What – apart from business matters – is the special thing
about your relationship with STEAG Power Minerals?
I find it very pleasant to deal with such receptive, communicative
and frank people from the Rhine and Ruhr. They are not only easy
to work with, but you can easily join in with them to celebrate
successes. With football, though, the fun stops. How seriously
they take it and how probably every single one of them can recite
the team line-up from last Saturday by heart – that I thought was
really impressive.
What would you like to wish the staff of STEAG Power
Minerals on their 35th anniversary?
I would like to send my warmest congratulations to the employees
and management on 35 years of successful work, and thank
them for their good and fair cooperation in the past few years.
For the future, I wish the entire company continued good fortune,
especially in the development of their foreign business. I am
sure that STEAG Power Minerals will then be able to master the
challenges of a changing energy landscape.
Fly ash supplied by Powerment contributed substantially to solving the concrete technology challenges faced in building the Moscow Raceway
Powerment GmbH, founded in 2010, is one of the youngest subsidiaries of STEAG Power Minerals
– but in the four years of its corporate history it has really taken off. In an extremely short time, the
Ettlingen-based company has established itself on the market as an important, reliable partner for
the power generation and construction materials industries in southern Germany.
The core business of Powerment GmbH, founded as a jointly
owned subsidiary by STEAG Power Minerals and EnBW AG,
is the recovery of power plant by-products from hard coal
fired plants and their marketing for the construction materials
industry. While the company only marketed by-products from
its parent group at the start, it succeeded even during 2011,
the year of its foundation, in concluding contracts with several
‘outside’ power plants. The company, based near Karlsruhe,
now has disposal agreements with numerous power plants
throughout Germany, and therefore enjoys the best possible
access to the relevant sources of raw materials.
Built on strong foundations
As the challenges of the future can only be mastered with a
motivated and committed team, Powerment took early steps
to build up the company’s professional expertise for the long
term, and will continue to pursue that strategy. By doing so,
Powerment has been able to lay secure foundations for the
company’s future success in record time.
Rapidly established on the market
After just under five years, Powerment has become an
established player on the market, as the company not only has
secure access to raw materials, but also an excellent logistics
network and extensive technical know-how. As Director
Gunter Reiner emphasizes, “What makes us stand out is
our ability to take any quantity at any time from the power
generation sector, and at the same time offer the construction
materials industry maximum security of supply.”

Kremer Baustoffe und Transporte GmbH & Co. KG
STEAG Power Minerals group
Kremer Baustoffe und Transporte GmbH & Co. KG
3 Questions to ...
A tradition of reliability
Over 50 years ago, when Romuald
Kremer founded a forwarding agency
for local goods transport, no-one
could have predicted how dynamically
his business would develop. But his
firm left its modest beginnings in the
picturesque village of Zeil am Main in
northern Bavaria far behind and was
transformed into a modern service
provider and reliable partner for the
construction materials industry. We are
taking the opportunity here to present
this company to you, as a subsidiary
in which STEAG Power Minerals and
Schwenk Zement KG each hold 50%
of the shares.
When Romuald Kremer founded his
company in the county of Hassberge,
Bavaria, in 1963, it initially focused on the
transport of goods in powder form – but
the founder soon expanded its activities to
include trading in mass produced construction materials. In the following years,
the company’s trading and transport activities were continuously expanded.
Starting in 1989, with new management,
the company’s profile began to change:
Kremer developed step by step into a
modern partner for the energy sector
and a supplier to the construction materials industry. That caught the attention of
STEAG Power Minerals (then still STEAG
Entsorgungs-GmbH): Following initial
discussions on the founding of a jointly
owned sales organization, SEG took on
50% of the shares in the company.
Reliable supplier to over
400 concrete works
Today, Kremer is the market leader for
power plant by-products in Bavaria,
Thuringia and Saxony, and also the
largest trading partner for those
products from the Czech Republic.
Over
30
haulage
companies
transport up to 100 truckloads per day for
Kremer. Over 400 concrete works place
their trust in the reliability and efficiency of
the experienced service provider.
As Kremer has large-scale silo facilities
with a capacity of over 50,000 metric tons,
the company is well positioned to face the
future, and will continue to deliver promptly
and reliably at all times.
... Dr. Hendrik Möller, Member of the Board of
Schwenk Zement KG
Dr. Möller, what is your connection with STEAG Power Minerals?
We are linked by the construction materials, and that not only in the technical sense,
but also in terms of business and even personally. STEAG Power Minerals and
Schwenk Zement AG have been connected for many years now by their joint ownership
of Kremer Baustoffe GmbH. There is an additional link in the many years spent by our
director Gerhard Hirth as a member and deputy chairman of the Advisory Board of
STEAG Power Minerals. And there are long-established and good business relationships resulting from the supply of fly ash to numerous ready-mix concrete works in the
Schwenk construction materials group.
What is special for you personally in your business relationship with
STEAG Power Minerals?
Business transactions are agreed by people, and one of the special features of the
cooperation between our two firms is that formal business relationships have developed into real personal friendships in the many
years we have been working together. That is by no means a matter of course in these fast-moving times. At Schwenk, we are very
pleased to have such a reliable and dependable business partner as STEAG Power Minerals.
Furthermore, we have together been able in the many years of joint research projects, events for customers and presentations at
trade congresses to increase the use of fly ash as an important additive in cement, and thus optimally to exploit the potential of fly
ash as a construction material. Schwenk Zement and STEAG Power Minerals are now partners in the development of optimally
matched construction material systems for applications in mortar, concrete and numerous special materials. It is our joint aim to
solve the technical and ecological problems of the construction industry by combining the different strengths of our products in
the best possible way.
What would you like to wish the staff of STEAG Power Minerals on their 35th anniversary?
We wish that STEAG Power Minerals’ plans and objectives for the development of the company will turn out just as successfully as
in the past. Together with far-sightedness and the necessary smidgeon of luck on the part of all those responsible, this will ensure
a sound basis for many more years of good cooperation.

Mr. Smid, how long has your company been working with
STEAG Power Minerals?
Cementbouw has been working with STEAG Power Minerals
since the mid-1980s, but the cooperation naturally intensified
in 1992 when we founded our joint subsidiary Euroment. Since
then, Euroment has developed into the market leader in the
supply of fly ash to the concrete industry in the Benelux countries.
But the links between our firms go even further – on the one
hand, Cementbouw and other companies in our group are
themselves customers of STEAG Power Minerals, and on the

the way in which STEAG Power Minerals pursues clear business
strategies but remains extremely flexible in implementing them
and always has a solution to offer.

Power Minerals Ltd.
STEAG Power Minerals group
Power Minerals Limited
Market and innovation leader
With annual sales of around 1.5 million tonnes of fly ash and bottom ash each
year our daughter company Power Minerals Limited is the leading ash marketing
company in the United Kingdom. Having been under STEAG ownership since
October 2010 Power Minerals currently has ash sales and management contracts at
six coal-fired power stations.
Power Minerals head office is situated near Birmingham in the
heart of England although all sales and logistics operations are
managed from the company’s offices located at Drax Power
Station in Yorkshire. As well as its sales and marketing activities
Power Minerals also operates two ash processing plants at Drax
and Rugeley Power Stations. A total of 18 staff are employed
by Power Minerals in the UK.
Power Minerals holds an excellent reputation in the UK
for addressing and solving problems on behalf of its main
customers – the coal-fired power generators. With many power
stations producing poor quality fly ash with a high level of
unburnt carbon, Power Minerals has introduced an innovative
and effective fly ash beneficiation plant at Rugeley Power Station.
The beneficiation process, which was developed in Germany,
reduces LOI and fineness levels within the fly ash such that
the processed material is able to comply with the EN450
Category S standard. Over the past three years the beneficiation
plant at Rugeley has been extended and now produces around
70,000 tonnes of high quality fly ash each year. Based upon the
success of the operation at Rugeley, Power Minerals is looking
to install similar plants at one or more additional power stations
in the UK.
Strategically well-positioned
The presence and market influence of Power Minerals in the UK
offers a strong strategic fit with STEAG Power Mineral’s operations
in Germany and Northern Europe. With coal-fired generation
declining in the UK, and with the commissioning of new coal-fired
power stations on the other side of the English Channel, the
potential for importing fly ash to the south-east of England
is being actively pursued. Development work on this project
will further strengthen the bond between Power Minerals
and its parent company in Germany.
pellets. Many new biomass power stations have been
commissioned and a number of units at coal-fired power
stations have also been converted from coal to biomass. With
the properties of biomass ash being significantly different from
coal ash, Power Minerals has been working on behalf of its
power station customers to identify and develop a beneficial
utilisation option for biomass ash. Following more than four
years of research and development work, Power Minerals is
close to achieving a commercially and environmentally beneficial
solution for processing biomass ash as a constituent of an
agricultural fertiliser product. As production of coal ash declines in
the next few years Power Minerals involvement in the processing
and marketing of biomass ash should help to ensure its continuing
and long-term success in the UK.
Their state-of-the-art fly ash beneficiation plant in Rugeley enables Power Minerals

It is clear that coal-fired power generation
has entered a period of decline in the UK
which will inevitably result in a reducing
production of fly ash and bottom ash over
the next few years. At the same time there
has been a growing emergence of biomassfired power stations resulting from either

Power Minerals enjoys a good working
relationship with its parent company in
Germany and collaborates closely in
projects such as fly ash and bottom ash
imports to the UK and development of a
new fly ash beneficiation process which,
having been designed in Germany, has
been successfully introduced at commercial

interest was really the technological
development of the Hawar Group.
Because the atmosphere at the meeting

right from the start, it soon developed into
more than just discussions. I am very pleased that our proposal to launch a joint

What decided you to enter into
such an extensive cooperation with
STEAG Power Minerals?
First, of course, the conditions were right
for doing business, as we can see great
potential for development in our home
region. But the chemistry between us
worked right from the start, and the family
atmosphere at STEAG Power Minerals
rapidly established the necessary trust. It

Photoment®
Photoment®
Innovative construction material from STEAG Power Minerals and KRONOS
Greeting by Dr. Heinz-Christian Krempels, Managing Director of
KRONOS Specialties GmbH
Photoment® – and the city breathes again
STEAG Power Minerals is becoming 35 years old, and KRONOS Specialties GmbH
sends its warmest congratulations on behalf of KRONOS International Inc. on the
occasion of that anniversary.
The firm, initially oriented towards waste disposal, has developed into an enterprise
which picks up on modern technological trends and develops them. The best example
of that is STEAG Power Minerals’ active participation in the present lighthouse initiative
‘InnovationCity Ruhr’, in the course of which the quality of life of the people in Bottrop
is to be significantly improved. One fundamental contribution by STEAG Power Minerals
is the material ‘Photoment®’, which is used for paving stones that clean the air.
KRONOS Specialties greatly values STEAG Power Minerals as a partner, and the two
companies are working together on the success of the product.
Photoment® is a result of the cooperation between STEAG Power Minerals and
KRONOS, in the course of which the specialists and technicians in the two companies
have worked together and will continue to do so intensively, enthusiastically, and with
confidence and extraordinary persistence. The Product and Process Development,
Applications Technology, Analytics, Patents, Supply Chain Management and
Communications departments have all made important contributions to that cooperation.
In the context of this joint work, KRONOS Specialties GmbH is responsible for the
manufacture, testing and application of the active, photocatalytic components.
STEAG Power Minerals handles the manufacture, advertising, technical support to
customers in the concrete industry and the marketing of Photoment®. Both companies
firmly believe in the success of this new technology and its benefit in contributing to a
healthy standard of living. They support and propagate the idea of using minerals to
keep the environment clean.
We, in Leverkusen, wish you many more years of excellent business results and
constant further development of our outstanding business relationship.
Dr. Heinz-Christian Krempels

Andreas Hugot (Managing Director of STEAG Power Minerals), Burkhard Drescher (Managing Director of the Innovation City management company) and Bottrop‘s Mayor Bernd
Tischler during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Photoment® test area in Bottrop
Especially in inner cities, heavy traffic is creating an
increasing problem for the quality of the air. Stringent limits
on air pollution by nitrogen oxides have been imposed
in the European Union since 2010, and local authorities
face heavy fines if they fail to comply. An innovative
construction material developed by STEAG Power Minerals
together with KRONOS can provide a solution:
Photoment® with its photocatalytic effect cleans the
urban air.
Photoment® is added in the form of a fine powder to construction
materials such as paving stones during their manufacture. Only
light is required to bring about a photocatalytic reaction on a
Photoment® surface, transforming harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx)
into safe nitrates (NO3-). This reaction can be repeated any number of times. “If, for example, a field the size of a FIFA football
pitch was laid out with Photoment®, it could remove 17 grams of
nitrogen oxides from the urban air each hour and
render them harmless without any additional energy input,”
explains Professor Michael Bruse (University of Mainz /
ENVI-MET GmbH), who has simulated the function of
Photoment® in a three-dimensional microclimate model.
In addition, the reaction of the titanium dioxide contained in
Photoment® with the light causes a ‘superhydrophilic’ surface to
be formed. That causes dew deposits or rainwater to spread out
on the surface and undermine the particles of dirt or organic
substances. The contamination detached in that way is then
rinsed off with the next rainfall. Photoment® surfaces therefore
remain cleaner for longer, and clean themselves.
Highlight at a national forum
In order to demonstrate the favorable properties of the new
additive to representatives of local authorities, Photoment® was
presented at the ‘Forum on Pollution Reduction in Inner Cities
with Heavy Traffic’. At that national event hosted recently
in Bottrop, the effect of Photoment® was demonstrated to
decision-makers from the local authority building and
environmental scene on authentic street paving in real time.
Test area in the Ruhr district’s center of innovation
A test area established in Bottrop as part of the ‘InnovationCity
Ruhr’ project is intended to demonstrate that Photoment® not
only works in the laboratory, but also in practice in highly polluted
inner city environments. At the recent ground-breaking
ceremony for laying out of the 750 m² test surface, Andreas
Hugot of STEAG Power Minerals was convinced the project
would be a success: “We are delighted to be able to
demonstrate the effectiveness of Photoment® in practice here at
InnovationCity in particular.” From the point of view of the City of
Bottrop, Mayor Bernd Tischler emphasized the benefits for the
atmosphere in Bottrop’s city center: “The test area is capable in
one hour of cleaning harmful nitrogen oxides from a space
almost twice the volume of the Bottrop Tetrahedron which
had previously been polluted almost to the limit. That’s a great
achievement.”

The Quality Management standard DIN EN ISO 9001 is surely
the best known certifiable management standard in Germany,
Europe and beyond. It sets out requirements for workflows
within a company which, when complied with, guarantee the
customer high quality products and services. The effectiveness
of the processes established in that way and of the system of
internal control mechanisms developed during the certification
process is regularly audited by independent experts from a
recognized certification body.
Production sequences constantly under scrutiny
The QM system at STEAG Power Minerals includes the efficient
structuring of production sequences and clear rules as to how
individual work processes are to be planned, implemented,
monitored and improved. All employees are under an obligation
to act in accordance with the rules of the QM manual in their
work.
At the manufacturing and handling facilities we operate, we have
also successfully introduced and certified an Environmental

improving the quality of our processes, we are therefore also
optimizing the effects of our actions on the environment by
setting ourselves ambitious targets and dedicating ourselves

We warmly congratulate STEAG Power Minerals
on their 35th anniversary and wish them continued success in what is surely a challenging
market environment.”
“Fly ash as an additive
for concrete is an important element
in the large line-up of basic materials for
concrete. It provides flexibility and manifold
choices for the concrete formulations. Fly ash helps
us to purposefully influence the characteristics of the
concrete. As a supplier of fly ash, STEAG Power Minerals
is a key player on the market and we are therefore
pleased to cordially congratulate the company on its
35th anniversary.”
Dr. Erwin Kern, President of the German
Ready-Mixed Concrete Association
(Bundesverband der Deutschen
Transportbetonindustrie e.V. –
BTB)
„On behalf of the whole
ZAG worldwide team, I would like
to extend our heartiest congratulations to
STEAG Power Minerals on achieving the important
milestone of 35 years of being in business. It is truly
a significant accomplishment that Steag Power Minerals
has become the recognized leading supplier and
marketer of coal ashes in Europe through its technical leadership,
reliability and professionalism. Since ZAG began working closely
in late 2012 to develop the North America market for STEAG
Power Minerals, we have enjoyed great success together in marketing
and delivering substantial quantities of fly ash from Europe.
We look forward to many more years of mutual success and to
being part of the extensive STEAG Power Minerals network.”
Dr. Burkhard Naffin, Vice President
Commercial, Lhoist Western Europe
Hard-coal fly ash as an
additive for concrete not only has a
beneficial impact on the characteristics
of unset and hardened concrete, is also
improves properties that are essential to its
durability, such as resistance to chloride ion penetration
and to chemical attacks. Thanks to such positive
characteristics, fly ash today plays a firm role in modern
concrete technology. By producing high quality fly ash
and securing its supply to the market, STEAG Power
Minerals has made an important contribution to this.
