Christmas Shut Down
Briefing for Senior Managers
The 2011 Switch & Save “Christmas Shut Down” is a short campaign
encouraging all to switch off unused equipment, lights, ventilation and
heating and cooling systems for the Christmas Break.
The Winter Break period - when most University buildings are closed - has been identified
as one which provides great opportunity for saving energy and reducing carbon emissions.
So – with the exception of long-running experiments and essential systems – almost all
energy using devices and systems should be turned off or set to frost protection only.
Managers are encouraged to endorse this campaign, and to use their own internal
communication channels to remind staff about the importance switching off their
equipment and of energy saving, this winter.
Campaign implementation
The short campaign will be delivered by the Switch & Save energy reduction campaign
partners (Energy Office, Accommodation Services, EUSA and Sustainability Office),
through local Energy Coordinators and volunteers in individual buildings.
Major campaign materials will be provided by the Switch & Save team, while face-to-face
engagement will be coordinated by the Sustainability Office, and other elements will be
provided by Communications and Marketing.
Key elements
The campaign is comprised of three parts:
1. Printed, email and screen reminders for staff to turn off their equipment.
Using Switch & Save campaign materials at all locations to remind staff and
students to turn off electrical equipment.
2. Coordinated face-to-face engagement. In the run up to the Christmas break,
Sustainability Engagement staff and Energy Coordinators will conduct
walkabouts and other activities to encourage and remind staff to switch off.
The social element of these activities will be emphasised, with support given
through participation in local activities.
3. Review of all equipment which could be switched off. Staff will be
encouraged to switch off both their equipment, and shared equipment, unless
marked otherwise. Printable signs will be provided by the campaign team,
marked “Leave me on. Winter Shutdown 2011.” Equipment including
computers which do not carry this notice should be switched off.
Campaign staff will work with lab managers and principal investigators to ensure essential
equipment is left alone. Clear advance warning will be given to all staff to eliminate
the risk of any experiments being shut off.
