SECURING NATURAL CARBON SINKS
AND HABITATS IN THE 'HEART OF
BORNEO'
PROJECT DATA
Country:
Indonesia
OBJECTIVE AND ACTIVITIES
The project aimed to conserve forests as natural carbon
reservoirs and to create new carbon sinks through
afforestation in the province of West Kalimantan. Slashand-burn farming in the buffer zone around Bukit Baka
Bukit Raya National Park caused loss of forest cover. These
losses, which affected the local population in particular,
have been mitigated through new zoning and alternative
means of using the forests. The project cooperated with a
forestry enterprise in the area bordering the national park to
identify forests with high conservation value and to mark
these as protection areas. Currently isolated and degraded
areas of forest between the national parks of Betung
Kerihun and Danau Sentarum have been reconnected
through reforestation activities at the community level
(Leboyan corridor).
