Dhaka Environmentally Sustainable Water Supply Project. Mott MacDonald has been appointed by the Asian
Bangladesh
Development Bank (ADB) to provide technical engineering and procurement assistance on the Environmentally
Sustainable Water Supply Project in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The ADB is providing a US$ 250 million loan for the scheme
which is being developed by Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (DWASA) and seeks to provide 24-hour
water supply to all connected households in six service zones of the DWASA. Mott MacDonald is supporting DWASA
to procure a design-build contractor to build a new 2000MLD river water intake, 25km raw water transmission lines,
and 500MLD water treatment plant for Dhaka. Reviewed lessons learned from a previous Design-Build-Operate (DBO)
contract in Dhaka, then recommended and adopted a revised approach with bidding documents based on FIDIC
Yellow Book and a new ADB standard bidding document for Design & Build (still in draft) which we helped review.

Water Treatment Expert for Chittagong – Design Review and Advisory Services. The objective of this assignment was

to the Bank team, CWASA and other development partners, on the implementation of the CWSISP project. In
particular we reviewed the activities and outputs related to feasibility study work and design of water treatment plants
and related water transmission and distribution facilities. We undertook a critical review of the designs being prepared
and provided detailed comments to allow CWASA to further enhance the quality of the designs. This was to include,
for example, assessing adequacy of technical options analyses, treatment process design, salinity mitigation
measures, and commenting on and recommending improvements to the feasibility, design reports and the FIDICbased tender documents.

Khilkhet Water Treatment Plant for Dhaka. Carried out project preparation technical assistance (PPTA) for an ADB

funded project to build a 1,000MLD new river intake, water treatment plant, transmission pipelines and distribution
reinforcement to supply 40% of Dhaka. We completed studies into the detailed scope of the project, the rationale
behind the designs, financial, economic, technical, social and institutional arrangements and the scope of future
consulting services. ADB extended our project to include preparation of Design & Build bidding documents and to
assist the Dhaka Water Supply & Sewerage Authority through the procurement process up to award of the USD 200m
construction contract.

Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Project –Stage II. The wastewater component of the project consisted of 24

km sewage pumping main, eight sewage pumping stations and nine sewage treatment plants with SCADA as well as
the replacement of over 200km of sewers and improvement at a further three wastewater treatment plants.
The water supply component comprised a 3 km open channel and 16 km raw water transmission main, a 500 MLD
water treatment plant, 115 km clear water transmission pipelines up to 2400 mm diameter, and three pumping stations.
Mott MacDonald’s work on Phase II focused on developing a detailed performance-based unaccounted-for water
(UFW) strategy and associated bid documentation, together with process design advice, all in support to the main
consultant.

system to provide up to 100 million m3 per year of potable water to augment supplies to Amman, the capital of Jordan.
A new groundwater wellfield, consisting of 55 production wells and 9 piezometer wells is being developed together
with pumping stations, reservoirs and approximately 320km of large diameter conveyance pipeline.

treats water abstracted from the Umbeluzi River on the outskirts of the city. It had a capacity of 144Mld which was
increased by 96Mld under this assignment. Mott MacDonald’s responsibilities on the project included detailed design,
preparation of tender documents and supervision of construction for the 4000m3/h WTW extension, associated intake,
power supply, and treated water pumping station as well as 27km of 1100mm diameter and 1000mm diameter treated
water pipelines.

Tsunami Rehabilitation Project. Assistance to local organizations in Pottuvil / Arugam Bay on the east coast of Sri
Sri Lanka
Lanka in rehabilitation and reconstruction works, and building up the capacity of these organizations to deal with the
aftermath of the disaster. Technical assistance was provided and civil works implemented in close consultation with
local agencies and communities. To address the solid waste problem, the project contributed to the realization of the
first engineered disposal site in Sri Lanka’s North and Eastern Provinces. Under the auspices of the project team,
implementation activities were outsourced to community-based organizations to create a sense of ownership and to
ensure that the activities benefited the tsunami-affected population.

Sudan
incorporates an integrated water resource management approach and comprises a number of feasible and bankable
projects. The programme approach will provide a long-term master plan that binds the projects and ensures
sustainable delivery at scale. The deliverables of the consultancy will allow the Sudanese Government, with possible
DFID support, to propose the programme for support to donors and financial institutions and to consequently develop
tender documentation for the detailed design, implementation and monitoring of the programme and its constituent
projects in Port Sudan.

TA to ERDP Eastern Recovery and Development Programme. The project purpose was to improve livelihood security

National Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Strategy, Phase I, II and III. Phase I and II prepared an urban WS&S
Tanzania
Strategy for Tanzania, covering 19 provincial capitals on the mainland, excluding Dar es Salaam, with populations up
to 400,000. The broad objective was to create independent, financially self sufficient utilities. The water supply strategy
was developed from assessments of the existing situation in each town, its investment needs and the ability of the
population to pay. Preliminary designs were prepared for identified interventions which provided immediate
improvements to facilities in each town. Phase III (Dar es Salaam Water Project) covered the preparation of detailed
designs for short term interventions to improve the water supply systems in four of the smaller towns. It also included a
component for the improvement of unaccounted for water control in the four towns.

Tariff Review and Affordability Study. The overall objective of the study was to assess the effectiveness and adequacy

Small Towns Water and Sanitation Project. The project provided a piped water supply, sanitation, stormwater drainage

and solid waste disposal to 7 towns in Uganda. 4 raw water pumping stations, 8 boreholes, 100 km of transmission
mains, 6 water treatment works, 6 clear water pumping stations, 16 elevated Braithwaite tanks, 400 km of distribution
systems and 5 000 customer connections were all constructed by the project. 15 handpump boreholes were
constructed to serve communities beyond the limits of the distribution systems. Mott MacDonald responsibilities
included design, review, tender issue, pre-bid site visits, tender evaluation, assisting with tender negotiations,
construction supervision, commissioning and project management.

Son La / Lai Chau Rural Development Project. Project aimed at poor upland and mountain communities in the two

Water Supply, Wastewater Collection, Disposal and Treatment Systems for the towns of Hadibo and Qalansiyah in

Soqotra Island. The project aimed to improve the quality of life of the population in the towns of Hadibo and Qalansiyah
by reducing health risks related to the use of insufficient drinking water (in terms of quantity and quality and lack of
wastewater collection and treatment. This goal was to be achieved through the provision of basic volume of safe water
through new and /or rehabilitated production and distribution systems and sanitary schemes improvement of the
operational efficiency of the rehabilitated and/or upgraded water supply and scheme, and an improvement of the
hygiene awareness and health attitudes of the population.
