ADMINISTRATIVE INSTRUCTIONS FOR
TRIAL OF CHAMBER ASSESSMENT
INTRODUCTION
1.
The ability to equalise pressure within the middle ear and sinuses
with the external atmospheric pressure is vital for personnel involved in
flying operations. Personnel who have difficulty doing so are predisposed
to an increased risk of middle ear or sinus injury when exposed to rapid
changes in altitude. A Trial of Chamber (TOC) is a functional clinical
assessment used to assess a person’s ability to achieve pressure
equalisation at varying rates of pressure changes.

As the RSAF Aeromedical Centre’s Hypobaric Chamber is
undergoing refurbishment works, all TOCs will be conducted at Naval
Underwater Medicine Centre’s (NUMC) facility in the interim.
ATTIRE
3.
The dress code for entrance into Sembawang Camp will be T-shirts
with trousers and covered shoes. Physical Training attire will be provided
by NUMC for the TOC.
LOCATION AND TIME
4.
Candidates are to assemble at the main gate of Sembawang Camp at
0730H sharp. Please be punctual as the TOC cannot proceed until all
scheduled candidates are present. NUMC personnel will be present to
escort the candidates from the camp gate to their chamber facility, which
is located within Sembawang Camp. The address of Sembawang Camp is
as follows (Refer to Annex A for a map of the location):

CHANGES IN PERSONAL SCHEDULE
5.
Please inform Singapore Youth Flying Club (SYFC) if you are
unable to attend your scheduled TOC session. This will free up the slot for
other candidates awaiting assessment.
RECENT ILLNESS
6.
Please inform SYFC if you have any fever, runny/blocked nose,
sorethroat, cough, blocked ears, eye infection or have yet to fully recover
from any recent illness one day before or on the day of TOC.
7.
The development of any significant medical condition or recent
surgery occurring after the Pre-Employment Medical Selection (Conducted
at the Aeromedical Centre) should be highlighted to SYFC as soon as
possible.
SECURITY
8.
Physical Movement. Upon entry into Sembawang Camp, all
candidates are to remain with the escorting personnel.
9.
Portable Electronic Devices. No laptop or tablet computers are
allowed in the base. While camera-enabled handphones can be brought into
Sembawang Camp, such devices not allowed in certain locations within the
camp, including the location of the chamber facility. Handphone lockers
are available for the safekeeping of camera handphones with a screen size
of 4.3 inches1 or less. As such, please refrain from bringing any handphone
that do not fulfil this screen size criterion.

1. Please bring your NRIC along.
2. Have an early breakfast
3. Clean your ears before the test.
4. No oil based varnish- eg nail polish on finger & toe nails.
5. Do not apply hair gel on your hair or facial cosmetics or medicated oil
on your skin
6. NO FASHION ACCESSORIES
7. Remove Body piercings
8. Do not wear contact lens, wear your spectacles.
9. Do not bring electronic gadgets including camera handphone, recording devices, tablets notebooks, MP3 and thumb drive, etc. * you will
need to surrender them at the pass office.
10.Attire: T-shirt, long jeans and sport shoes.
11.During the Chamber run test: Cotton clothing will be provided to candidates.
12.Try or avoid bringing bag or items to the Navy base
13.During the hyperbaric bounce dive test, it will be quite warm and humid.
14.You will be examine by a doctor before the test to determine if you are
fit for the test. You will be in a chamber where the pressure will be
changed. Allow about half a day for this test. The doctor will be able
to provide you with certified document for excuse from school.
15.Clearance is needed to enter the camp, your parents or guardians do
not have access.
