Play! Healthy City, Healthy Community June 22, 2017 1 1,2,3…PLAY! Draw as many things, ideas, or experiences you can come up with about the topic of Play! 2 Origins, History, Funding 3 Play The concept of play is undergoing a renaissance. Whereas once it may have been applied to immature behavior, or used to describe the wasting of time, now it is recognized as an essential form of intellectual work for both children and adults, as well as a path to creative productivity and social wellbeing. 4 Play Animals, including humans, play under the most adverse of circumstances; it is irrepressible. And research shows that consistent playtime fosters empathy, makes us smarter and more adaptable, and builds a framework for complex social behavior. 5 Play Goals To explore the variety of ways that contemporary artists address ideas about play within their artwork. To support the creation of new artwork— public, temporary, and site-specific—inspired by the theme of play and influenced by community participation in the creative process. 6 Play Goals To promote and educate about the creative, intellectual, psychological, and recreational benefits of play for community members of all ages through an active series of public engagements, exhibitions, artist residencies, and programs. To explore playful artistic processes for K-5 schoolchildren to increase Creativity, one of the four 21st Century Skills. 7 Play Goals To uncover possible engagement practices around play that could be incorporated into future Art Center programs and operations. 8 Play 9 Play 10 Play 11 Play 12 Play 13 Play 14 Play 15 Play 16 Timing Exhibition and program series: September 16December 30, 2017 Season of Play 17 Partnerships Stanford D.school Palo Alto Libraries Junior Museum & Zoo Jenfunira Camp 18 Cross Promotion Season of Play flyer 19 Your turn!
