Endnote Part I 1 WHERE TO FIND ENDNOTE Go to http://www.library.up.ac.za/referencing/index.htm Under “Referencing software” choose Endnote for a Tutorial & Download links 2 Read Download instructions Readthethe Download and instructions and Click on PC to start the Download Click on PC to start the Download. (Use the MAC link for Mac computers) 1. Save the .zip file somewhere on your computer 4 1. Double click on . zip folder 5 1. Save the extract files to a destination folder. 2. Save both the .msi file and the license.dat file in the destination folder. (Your license number is included in the licence.dat folder) 6 1. Close all MS Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook & PowerPoint). 2. Click on .msi file. 3. Click on Install (Installation won’t be successful if license.dat is not in the same folder as the .msi file) 7 1. Click on Run 8 1. Follow installation instructions Once the installation is "Finished", you may delete the files you saved earlier to your Desktop (EndnoteX701UPSL10324.zip, EndnoteX7Inst.msi and License.dat files). You are now ready to start using the Endnote X7 Software. You will find a shortcut to EndNote X7 under Start, All Programs, EndNote. Alternatively, 9 use the Endnote icon on the desktop: Create a New Library to add your references 1. Click on File. 2. Click on New 3. Name your new Library and select the correct folder 4. Click on Save 10 COMPILING YOUR DATABASE • CAB Abstracts, Medline, Zoological Record (Web of Science) • Science Direct • Wildlife & Ecology Studies Worldwide (Ebscohost) • Biological Abstracts (Proquest) • WorldCat Discovery (new catalogue of UP) • Pubmed (search from within Refworks) • ISAP (Sabinet ) • Google Scholar • Manually (adding references by hand) 11 CAB ABSTRACTS ENDNOTE 12 Do a search on CAB Abstracts and select the references to export Click on the dropdown arrow and select Save to Endnote Desktop 13 Decide which elements must form part of your database and click on Send 14 Your first time use of Endnote might lead to this screen Use the drop down arrow and select 15 Other From the displayed menu select Endnote 16 Endnote is displayed in the window and you may continue by clicking on OK 17 The exported references displayed in Endnote 18 To copy references to groups or libraries: 1. Select references to be moved/copied 2. Click on References 3. Select Copy references to 4. Choose the Library 19 References have been moved to the correct Library 20 SCIENCE DIRECT EndNote 21 Do a search on Science Direct and select the references to be exported Click on “Export ” 22 • Click on “RIS ” • Click on Export 23 Select EndNote if available otherwise select other and search for EndNote 24 To copy references to groups or libraries: 1. Select references to be moved/copied 2. Click on References 3. Select Copy references to 4. Choose the Library 25 WILDLIFE & ECOLOGY STUDIES WORLDWIDE EndNote 26 Do a search and select some of the records by clicking on “Add to folder” icon 27 Once you started adding items the Folder icon will change and a list of the added items will appear in the right hand column 28 To view the list of selected records click on “Folder” or “Folder view” 29 Select records to be exported To export the selected results click on Export 30 1. Select the “Direct Export in RIS Format” button 2. Click on “Save” 31 To copy references to groups or libraries: 1. Select references to be moved/copied 2. Click on References 3. Select Copy references to 4. Choose the Library 32 Biological Sciences EndNote Do a search on Biological Abstracts and select the references to export Click on Save ENDNOTE From this dropdown menu select RIS Check the displayed information and click on Continue 36 Check that it is going to EndNote and click on OK 37 To copy references to groups or libraries: 1. Select references to be moved/copied 2. Click on References 3. Select Copy references to 4. Choose the Library 38 WorldCat Discovery new Library Catalogue EndNote Supply search terms in search window and enter To to view the list of selected records Login Refworks and click on “My List” click on Search. Select Online Catalogue or Database Select some of the records by clicking on the icon Select records to be exported Select “Cite Record” Select “Cite with Endnote” To copy references to groups or libraries: 1. Select references to be moved/copied 2. Click on References 3. Select Copy references to 4. Choose the Library 44 Pubmed EndNote 45 1. Click on Tools 2. Select Online Search 46 1. Select Pubmed 47 1. Add authors / keywords / titles etc. 2. Click on Search 48 1. From the list of results select the references to be added to your Endnote Library. 2. Click on References , Select Copy References to, and select the correct Endnote Library 49 50 Open up Google Scholar Click on Settings 51 Depending on the Reference managing software you are using, select either select either Endnote of Refworks. Click on Save 52 53 ADD REFERENCES MANUALLY EndNote 54 1. Click on References 2. Select New Reference 55 1. Complete this template. 2.
