The straws are cut into halves and handed out to the
audience. The participants stand up, spread out and have
a minute to do some sort of physical activity to get their
hearts racing. After the minute is up, the participant’s
plug their nose with one hand, and then place the straw to
their mouth with the other. They are only supposed to
breathe through the straw. It is very difficult, and it shows
the audience what it is like to breathe for an individual
who has emphysema on a daily basis, not even doing
physical activity. (People with asthma are excluded from
this segment for health reasons).
Two balloons are needed per presentation. The presenter
calls two volunteers from the audience to have a balloonblowing race. Although beforehand one balloon is cut
slightly so it cannot inflate. The volunteers blow the
balloons and one person obviously wins (the un-cut
balloon). The presenter explains the comparison to how a
healthy persons lungs/alveoli would inflate and function
properly while the lungs of a person who has emphysema
due to smoking would not so easily inflate/function.
