Activism – Light Group: ICKFELK HLIOS (sun) Iliana, Greece Claudio, Italy Konstantina, Cyprus Fiona, Ireland Elvina, Sweden Lisandra, Portugal Kostas, Greece Title: Sustainable Town(Integrated Project) – to be used as a base on which further environmental study can be developed Subjects of activity Primary school Children 7 – 10 years Teacher Title: Sustainable Town(Integrated Project) – to be used as a base on which further environmental study can be developed Action – Part A Create something that they can see in the town/village near them, e.g. car/house etc using recycled materials that they have gathered as a class(Individual). Action – Part B: Radiometer Create a sun-pressure turbine using a bottle, aluminium and paper which can all be recycled. (Collaborative groupwork). This will all be displayed as a model sustainable town. How does it work Light has a double nature: it behaves as a wave for many phenomena, but it’s also composed of particles (photons) When a photon collides with a surface, it presses on it, and the amount of this pressure depends on the reflectivity of the surface. A completely reflective surface (aluminium foil) is pressed more than a completely absorbitive surface (black paper). Each fan blade has 2 opposed surfaces: one covered by aluminium, the other by black paper. When the light strikes the fan, it rotates because of the difference of pressure on its blades. Title: Sustainable Town(Integrated Project) – to be used as a base on which further environmental study can be developed Operation Look at home and in school for items that can be recycled. Design and make urban item (cut, paste, paint, etc). Build the fan (alternate aluminium and paper ‘wings’ of the fan). Put in the bottle (vacuum). Place in the model town in sunny spots. Title: Sustainable Town(Integrated Project) – to be used as a base on which further environmental study can be developed Goals Promote the mindset that things can be used again and again for many different purposes as part of the broader goal of cultivating Environmental Awareness. (Part A) Recognize that solar energy can be exploited by people as an alternative and possibly more viable form of energy.
