(SPS) was formed in 1997 by a group of sailing enthusiasts to rekindle Parry Sound’s sailing heritage through excellence in regatta management and sail training. Among the international regattas it has hosted was the 2000 Shark World Championships, with 54 crews from Canada and Europe. Three hundred local volunteers and the support of dozens of community businesses and groups made it a success. The Sail Parry Sound Sailing School (SPS3) began in 1998 to bring sailing instruction to the children of Parry Sound. In 2003, it won the William Abbott Senior Award from the Canadian Yachting Association, (now Sail Canada) for excellence in sail training. After operating for eight years on borrowed premises, Sail Parry Sound moved in 2006 to its home at 30 Waubuno Road, a dedicated site for the sailing school and regattas. Sail Parry Sound coaches and racers have access to the top coaches in Canada and opportunities to train with the Ontario Racing Team. The Big Sound Challenge youth regatta shared the CYA award for Best Recreational Sailing Event of 2009. Opening this summer Phase 2 of the sailing centre development, an observation deck and café kiosk will open this spring!
