A 129-year-old building in Old Town/Chinatown is being redeveloped into Pine Street Market, an open
marketplace with food, beverage and sundries vendors on the ground floor and creative office space on the two
upper floors. Siteworks Design | Build, also the project’s developer, began demolition work last month on the
28,500-square-foot property, known as the Baggage and Carriage Building.
Most of the materials being removed from the site are being recycled, including up to seven layers of wood flooring
on the ground floor and two layers on the upper floors. Select beams and columns will be re-purposed as tables,
chairs, and benches in the building.
Improvements planned for the building include a full seismic upgrade, removal of a large section of the roof and
refurbishing of the building’s large skylight, adding stairwells and an elevator, and rebuilding all of the structure’s
windows. Lightweight concrete decks will be poured on the second and third floors, and the building’s beams,
trusses, and brick walls will be sandblasted. The project is slated for completion this fall.
