The Healthcare Area of LUISS Business School for over twenty years has focused its attention on

2 PAST EXPERIENCES
Among the more recent and significant training programs developed by LUISS Business School
there are the following projects, regarding the healthcare industry and/or the international market:
Executive Master in Healthcare & Pharmaceutical Administration (EMPHA)
The Executive Master (week-end program), aims at providing the skills, knowledge and tools
necessary for effective management of public and private organizations operating in the health
sector.
The innovative value of the initiative lies in the multidisciplinary of the training programs, in the
dimension of the analysis perspective (from the medicament to private and public health and
biotechnology) and in teaching methods that are able to maintain a high level of participation
throughout the whole process.
EMPHA is addressed to all those engaged in the conduct of their clinical or managerial business, in
institutions, in public and private health organizations, consulting firms and pharmaceutical as well
as biomedical companies, who want to improve their performance and that of the organization in
which they work.
The Master answers the needs of professional growth and development of:
- doctors who want to succeed and have access to clinical-oriented management positions or
who have already occupied leading positions;

Master Program in Management of Biomedical Products (PROBIOMED)
The aim of the Master is to train the professional figure of the "Product Specialist", an expert in
high technology products, widely used in the biomedical field.
The target market for these products are public and private healthcare organizations, that is

hospitals, community hospitals, the hospitals classified by the Institutes for Research,
Hospitalization and Care Scientific Institutes and University Hospitals.
The Master develops competencies regarding products and markets on competitive strategies,
attitudes and purchasing procedures in the markets. In addition, it examines the economics
necessary for the analysis of prices and margins in competitive contexts. The product specialist is
characterized by the need of emphasized behavioral skills (communication, negotiation, decisionmaking, etc.) that can be acquired through institutional courses on fundamental processes of the
organizational behavior.
The Master is addressed to graduates (or four-year - old system) in economics, legal, political and
social, as well as in technical, biological, pharmaceutical and medical disciplines.

Pharmacoeconomics and policies of the medicament: HIV therapeutic area, Abbott
The course aims at transferring knowledge on the relationship between economics and the
pharmaceutical industry, on policies with particular attention to the price and the reimbursement.
Furthermore, it focuses on the analysis of the cost impact of the use of ARV medicaments, on the
principles of pharmacoeconomics, the techniques of the economic value of medicaments and the
tools for measuring the quality of life as well as their use in the pharmaceutical market towards the
decision makers (regions, hospitals, etc.), specialists and prescribers.
The programs includes the following topics: Economics and policies of the drug, Policies and
regulation of the pharmaceutical sector, Regional Policies, Pharmacoeconomic Enhancement,
Value and meaning of pharmacoeconomics, Main techniques of economic evaluation, Crucial
factors concerning the techniques of economic analysis, Costing, Calculation of results,

Management of Healthcare Organizations
The course is structured into modules and supports the development of managerial skills in
hospitals, IRCCS, polyclinics and private nursing facilities by adopting an integrated logic that
comprises all the systems, tools and management methods applied successfully in healthcare
organizations. The course enables participants to acquire the skills needed to solve organizational,
accounting and human resource management problems. Furthermore, it gives them the ability to
evaluate economic outcomes and the quality of services of management decisions.
The main addressees of the Master are General, Health and administrative managers, District
Managers, Department Managers, heads of clinical units. In addition, the course is addressed to
those who, although operating in different sectors and services, intend to study into deep the

critical issues related to health management.

Young Cardiac Surgeons Managers, LEVI Biomedical
In partnership with SICCH, Italian Society for Cardiac Surgery, the custom program on
"Managerial training for Cardiac Surgeons" is addressed to working cardiac surgeons, not yet in
leading positions, enrolled to the SICCH. The Master program, held in LUISS Business School in
Rome, lasted 12 days and was structured into 6 modules of 2 days. It is addressed to 35 students.
The program included the following topics: Organizational assets and financing systems of
healthcare companies, Planning and control systems in healthcare organizations, Human resources
management in healthcare organizations, Leadership and group management, Communication in
healthcare organizations, Quality Management of health services
Management of healthcare organizations (San Giovanni Calibita Fatebenefratelli Hospital)
The course is aimed at transferring professionally updated tools to enable participants to acquire
the skills needed to solve organizational, accounting and human resources management problems,
and evaluate the outcomes of the decisions taken.
The course is divided into the following 6 modules: Comparison of national and regional
healthcare systems, Planning and Organization health, Human resources management in healthcare
organizations, Administration, Finance and Management Control of Purchasing, From the working
group to the integration for the performance improvement, Change Management and Leadership
“Amica Italia” Project, Training Program in managerial techniques for economic operators of
China.
The Project was aimed to provide a support to the needs of development of China, particularly
through a constant and effective cooperation between Italian and Chinese firms. The main
objectives have been:
1) to develop competences of local human resources, in managerial and intermediate positions in
order to support the processes of social and economic development of the country;
2) to offer a deep knowledge of Italy, overcoming stereotypes and prejudices and highlighting the
qualities and the real possibilities of constructive collaboration between the realities of our two
countries;
3) to train a substantial number of managers and potential managers, capable to interact with the
Italian system.
The planning of the training actions has been related to a preliminary analysis of the real training
needs of China.

Training Course for Retail Store Manager Commercial Sector in China
The course aims to provide a tailored knowledge to develop the key skills needed to operate in the
Sales and Retail Management context with the highest expertise. With this perspective, the course
path is divided in 5 modules, related to the respective fundamental areas of the sales business
management. Each module includes 16 hours of teaching and 8 hours of case studies, business
simulations and professional experience presentations.
The modular structure is developed as an intensive course (15 days in 3 weeks) throughout a
conceptual path, starting with essential basic concepts and moving progressively to specific models
and schemes focused on sales management. The modules are the following:

Public procurement in an international context: Managing calls for tenders for the provision of
goods and services
Training program for the sales managers of Gore, coming from different countries where the firm
works, that need to study in deep the level of knowledge in call for tenders and develop in the more
effective ways their contractual strategies.
The course provides an overview of public procurement in an international context and specifically
of the calls for tenders for the provision of goods and services.
Two branches of law are investigated in this field: European Union law and Comparative law.
In fact, the course covers two main topics:
1. European Union law of public procurement
2. Law of public procurement in 8 different countries (enforcement of EU law and internal
law): France, Germany, Greece, Belgium, Scandinavia, Great Britain, Turkey, Spain.
The proposed perspective will compare the experiences of the different countries. The course took
place in English Language.
Master in studies and political and economical international relations for Iraqi Diplomats –2009
and 2011 Edition

Project developed for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs - General Direction for cooperation to
development, for 15 Iraqi diplomats, to improve their of knowledge on political, legal, economics
topics to perform their diplomatic activity.
The project has been developed around 5 main areas:

In addition to the class teaching activity, seminars of specialization, workshop on specific topics, a

LUISS Business School and Finmeccanica together for the FLIP Final Conference,
4 novembre 2010, 21 July 2011
The final conference of the FLIP (Finmeccanica Learning Induction Program) project for the
young new members of staff of Finmeccanica Group, took place at LUISS Guido Carli University.
The meeting has seen the participation of Top Managers of the firms of the Group and of many
young resources of 5 countries (UK, USA, Italy, France Sweden) that have took part in the FLIP
course.
The Management and the young resources of Finmeccanica have examined in depth, during a
debate some topics that the participants have identified as fundamental to go on with their
experience of development, such as:
1) The intergenerational dialogue
2) The values and the competences of the Y Generation of Finmeccanica
3) The future of Finmeccanica Group
4) The integration of Business and Firms
The meeting was aimed to represent an occasion of "direct dialogue" of the management with the
young people that were attending the event, but virtually, with all the staff of Finmeccanica.
2 AIMS
LUISS Business School aims to offer a unique professional development program for pharmacists,
designed to develop an innovative learning path.
The managerial training program combines the following aims:
 to support the professional growth of pharmacists through outstanding academic knowledge
and excellent practical experience;
 to develop a new community of professionals, giving to each participant a new opportunity
to meet, exchange experiences, and mix different knowledge;

 to open up new horizons in the participants' views, favoring an inter-cultural sensibility and
a global mindset;
 to transfer best practices across countries and stimulate the debate and discussion about the
best operating solutions and the common operating issues in the pharmaceutical industry.
The general aim is to increase awareness, understanding and adoption, among professionals of the
best practices, introducing a comparative perspective among different countries. In fact the training
program intends to provide a comparative analysis of the different systems and policies, of the
legislative, organizational, and institutional frameworks of each country.
The specific objectives are:

Acquisition of advanced theoretical knowledge and skills: the program aims to provide a
solid analytical and conceptual foundation transferring a broad knowledge in Epidemiology,
Health care systems, the Pharmaceutical sector, the Biomedical technologies sector,
management of Hospital and Out of Hospital pharmacies. The aim is to develop and
strengthen participants’ professional management competences.

Acquisition of applied knowledge and skills: the program will provide the tools and methods
for critical analysis and problem-solving and therefore will develop the capability and
techniques needed to succeed in the participants’ working context. The practical application
of the concepts known in class and a focused training in the participant’s specific area of
work are promoted. With a practical, hands-on approach participants will have the
opportunity to apply and solidify the concepts covered in the theoretical session.
This proposal has been developed by LUISS Business School for the Chinese Pharmaceutical
Association and for the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. These partners may change
the proposal with integrations according to their specific aims.
3 PARTICIPANT PROFILES
The training project is addressed to hospital and out of hospital pharmacists with a varied range of
training and professional experiences, identified by the Chinese Pharmaceutical Association and by
the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. The program will welcome Chinese participants
as well as Italian and European students and fellows who are wishing to deepen topics of interest
for the management of Hospital and Out of Hospital pharmacies and also to understand the rationale

of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and possible integration of western medicine, drug
therapies and TCM.
They must be very willing to catch growth opportunities and to invest in their cultural development.
They should be interested in improving their level of knowledge about the topic for their job tasks,
in order to develop their professional skills in the best way. We plan to form a class including a
minimum of 15 participants.
4 PROGRAM STRUCTURE AND CONTENTS
The program is a co-developed training program that will be proposed and executed in collaboration
with the Chinese Pharmaceutical Association and the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences,
in Beijing.
The course is a full time program lasting 2 weeks that will take place in dates fixed in agreement
with the Chinese Pharmaceutical Association and the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences.
The training activity will last 7 hours per day.
The course will take place at LUISS Business School, Rome, Italy and could be executed 4 times a
year. The course could be organized also in Beijing with the same formula.
For the duration of the project, there will be also an online support with the provision of materials
on the topics analysed.
As regards course contents, we provide a general description of the themes that LUISS Business
School suggests for the program. This proposal will be discussed with the Chinese Pharmaceutical
Association and the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences in order to set the final version of
the project.

5 TEACHING METHODS
LUISS Business School runs an advanced educational model, strongly oriented towards the needs

Chinese scholars involved in this program.

Class Lectures:
The training in class will favour the knowledge transfer and an interactive approach
Each topic, during the classes, will be analysed following these steps:

illustration of theoretical (methodological and conceptual) principles;

focus on the participants’ specific area of interest, considering their working activities, in order
to allow the transfer in the daily work of the learned knowledge;

analysis of the main critical situations and operating problems also through some complex
cases;

Experiential Learning:

The classroom training is combined with learning based on direct experience, which consists of
site visits at leading institutions and healthcare organizations. LUISS can plan a visit to a
pharmaceutical firm and an in-hospital pharmacy.
The practical analysis of theoretical aspects through cases and examples and the sharing of
experiences between participants and experts of health policy and management will take place.
Peer Learning:
Teaching staff takes a pragmatic learning approach aimed at fostering peer-to-peer involvement,
interaction and exchange of experiences among participants through team working both in the
classroom and online. Participants will be involved in debates and exchanges of views on the most
interesting national and international topics and they will become part of LUISS health
management community, that is the community of teachers, researchers and health professionals
who work for the University LUISS Guido Carli. Perspectives for future researches will be
proposed. Teaching methods are designed to enhance not only participants’ professional
knowledge, but also their ability to plan effectively, solve problems, and make decisions
developing both a strategic and methodological approach.
Leadership Development:
The leadership regards the capacity of creating vision, of leading and developing people, as well as
managing and implementing changes. Initiatives for the development of leadership skills will be:
custom lessons, interviews and formal and informal meetings with leaders of the different sectors
recognized by the national and international healthcare context.
International Focus:
LUISS Business School has established partnerships with leading players in health training and
management both at national and international level, in order to spread best practices of health
management. The international orientation of the master is guaranteed by the offer of courses
dedicated to international comparison, the involvement of teachers and foreign leaders and the
activation of international partnerships.
Distance Learning:

Part of the learning process takes place through the use of a learning management system that is
easy to use and enables the sharing of learning materials, the interaction between participants and
distance learning: Blackboard Learning System™ platform.
The University, as part of its E-educational model, adopts Blackboard Learning System™ platform,
a web based course-management system. Blackboard is a tool that allows faculty and learners to use
online materials and activities to complement face-to-face teaching. It is aimed at making more
effective and efficient knowledge sharing, allowing interaction between participants and teaching
staff with documents exchange and forums. LUISS will provide a tutor of the platform with the task
of monitoring the correct use of it, of assuring materials availability and of communicating with
learners.

Tutorship
During the classes a tutor will provide continuative assistance and organizational support to the

6 FACILITIES
The courses will take place at LUISS Business School, in Rome, viale Pola, 12 and they can be also
organized in Beijing at the Chinese Pharmaceutical Association location.
The Business School is located near the city center of Rome, near the most beautiful parks of the
city (Villa Borghese, Villa Ada ecc.). Particularly suitable to host the events of the ruling class, it is
equipped with modern facilities that support the training.
Classrooms will be furnished with appropriate equipments, at least:

LUISS Business School will provide participants with support for the individuation of the hotel
accommodation and other logistical aspects related to the stay in Italy.
Inside the University there is a dining hall accessed by students, professors, and guests of the
University (visiting professors etc.).

7 CERTIFICATE OF ATTENDANCE
A certificate of attendance will be handed over to the participants at the end of the course
(minimum attendance required: 80% of the training activity).

Each aspect of the training program must be validated by a scientific referent, whose task is to
guarantee coherence and rigor in methodologies and teachings with respect to the established

Full Program:

The cost does not include journey, board and lodging expenses. The fee is comprehensive of
lectures, lunches at LUISS dining hall, utilization of Blackboard Learning System™ platform
Platform, training materials, access to LUISS services (library, wi-fi, etc.).
The proposal is valid for a minimum number of 15 participants.
