Chapter 13: Home and Leisure What is Home and Leisure? � This is the technology all around you! � Any form of technology that brings you news and/or entertainment � Examples include: � Smart Phones � Tablets � Laptops Smart Homes Smart home technology (aka home automation) uses information technology to improve the convenience, security, and energy efficiency of buildings (ITGS Textbook). Many are common but some only exist in the home of the rich and famous or research laboratories. Home Network � Centralizes control and allows many aspects of the house to be controlled from a mobile device. � Including: � Temperature � Lights � Door Locks � Other home appliances Smart Home Benefits � � � � Comfort Convenience Increased security Reduced consumption of resources � Smart Meters: Allow families to see breakdowns of water, electricity, and other resource consumption. � Safety � Project Gerhome: Smart home for elderly people. Biometrics � Scans a body part for authentication purposes. � Eyes � Finger � Hand � Voice and facial patterns Piracy With the increase in the amount of access to the internet lead to the increase in the amount of ILLEGAL downloads of copyrighted material. Examples of peer-to-peer sites: � � � � Piratebay Limewire BitSnoop Torrentz Piracy (cont.) � Prevention: � Motion Picture Association of America � Recording Industry Association of America � These associations educate users about copyright infringement. Digital Rights Management (DRM) � Refers to technologies that limit what a user can do with a digital file � DVD’s are a prime example: � Use a form of DRM called Content Scrambling System which prevents illegal copies from being made Encrypted DVD content Digital Rights Management (DRM) � DRM’s can be applied to data in a copious amount of ways: � Prevent printing of a book (PDF) � Expire content after a certain date � Prevent copying and pasting � Prevent making copies � Restrict the number of copies � Restrict a certain file from being seen Digital Rights Management (DRM) � DRM’s can cause compatibility issues with some systems. � It can be fairly easy to remove DRM using a special software. � Keep in mind that this is ILLEGAL under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Digital Entertainment � Mobile games (apps) � Online games � Video games Technological developments enable increasingly advanced gaming on smaller devices. Types of Gaming � Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOG) or Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPG) � Typically features fantasy or magical themes, require players to create an avatar. � Complete missions or questions � World of Warcraft � Virtual Worlds: similar to MMOG, but lack defined objectives and allows the player to “live” in the world. � Sims � Second Life � Club Penguin Concerns Examples of Health concerns include: � Players not getting enough exercise � Players being addicted to the game to where their education, work, and personal lives. Even extreme cases can cause death due to exhaustion from playing a game several days straight. Gaming addiction in Korea: –80% of the population have access to some of the fastest broadband connections in the world. –Obsessive gaming is a thing and caused a 24 year old man to die from heart failure after playing online for 86 hours NON-STOP. –Also there was a death of a 3 year old girl because her parents were too addicted to online gaming that they neglected her. They have developed counseling centers across the country and have “boot camps” for seriously addicted teenagers Concerns � Violence � Higher resolution displays � Faster graphic processors � Improved sound effects � The use of input devices to imitate real life weapons � These lead people to believe that seeing such realistic violence and actually participating in it can lead to psychological problems on kids. Facts on Video games � The military uses games to train their soldiers. � This scares the anti-violent game campaigners to believe that violent video games desensitize children. � “... no credible evidence exists of a long term, direct correlation between gaming and real life violence…” (ITGS textbook) � There are actually some proven positive effects in playing video games: � Improved hand to eye coordination � Logical thinking � Physical Fitness Online gaming � It’s harder for content through online games to be controlled. � This is typically why you had to be a certain age to create an account for any online games. � i. Club Penguin, WeeWorld � The typical age limits were usually 13, 16, or 18. Augmented reality � Add a layer of digital information to our view of the real world. � Uses a combo of GPS and compass data, your phone can determine its position and the direction it’s pointing in. � Example: � Yellow 1st down line Online News � News aggregation sites: pick out the top headlines from many news sites and display it on one page. � The problem? � Online newspapers believe that their articles are being illegally copied. � Paywalls: Systems that require payment to access certain news articles, or after a certain amount of articles have been read for free Citizen journalism � This is when news events are reported first by normal people rather than media outlets. � Think of Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and even YouTube. � Concerns: � Invasion of Privacy � Ethics Television � Analog to digital � Digital signals require less bandwidth transmissions = HDTV � Better quality (both audio and visual) � Less susceptible to interference. � Greater number of channels � More expensive � Video on Demand (VOD)- Miss an episode? No problem. E-books � Electronic copies of books, magazines, and newspapers. � Some can be downloaded for free and others you can purchase. � Kindle, Nook, even your own cellphone � E-book readers use electronic ink displays rather than LCD. � Consume less power Digital Preservation � Digital data does not wear out or decay and every copy is a perfect copy of the original. � Digitizing preserves films, books, maps, paintings, and sound recordings. � Digital restoration: the use of image processing techniques to return works to their original quality or even add effects that weren’t possible back then.
