Welcome Letter
Dear Parents:
We would like to welcome you to our pack. Cub Scouting offers your son the opportunity
to grow physically and mentally, build character and leadership skills, develop good
citizenship traits, and most importantly, have FUN.
Our adult volunteer leaders are devoted to making your son's experience in Scouting one
that will be remembered for many years to come. The parents of Pack 284's Cub Scouts
are required to participate in the Pack's activities because we have found that this
participation acts to strengthen the bond between parent and child. Your participation in
the program also provides the Pack with the diversified experience of its members'
parents.
Also, please consider being some type of leader. There are many positions such as den
leader, assistant den leader, secretary, pack committee member, activity coordinator,
etc., available.
If you ever have any questions about our program or desire to become a registered
leader please do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to sharing the wonderful
world of Cub Scouting with you and your son, who will become a part of one of our
country's finest traditions -Scouting!

Cub Scouting and Your Family
The Cub Scout program helps to meet your boy's growth needs. As a boy develops, he
has specific development needs such as:

To learn new physical skills. He can do this through games, sports, and crafts.
As he develops his coordination, he gains a sense of worthiness and acceptance
by his peers.
To learn to get along with boys of his same age. He needs to form friendships
with other boys. He needs to learn how to balance giving and receiving affection
if he is to relate well to his peers. He needs to belong to a group of boys his own
age. Being a part of a Cub Scout den helps fulfill these needs.
To develop his mental processes. He can develop his mental process by reading,
writing, and calculating. He needs opportunities to use language to express ideas
and to influence others. He must move from a preoccupation with self to
understanding how and what others think of him. Opportunities for observation
and experimentation will help him learn self-reliance. Den activities and
meetings, along with the advancement program, help him develop mentally.
To develop a value system. He is developing a sense of what is right and wrong
and what is fair and unfair. He will do this by cooperating with other boys, by
being taught, by examples of adults, and from positive reinforcement. He begins
to develop democratic social attitudes.
To develop personal independence. He is becoming less dependent on adults.
His same-age friends become important to him. In his den, and in the pack, he
exercises his independence while learning to get along with others.
Your son also needs to belong to a "group" of boys his own age. This group is a key
component of the Cub Scout program. A den is like a neighborhood group of six or
eight boys in which he will achieve status and recognition.
As you learn more about how Cub Scouting works and what goes on in a den and a
pack, you will see that the program helps your boy in these five important
developmental needs. The uniqueness of Cub Scouting is that you, as his family, join
the program with your boy. You will help him all along the way.

Uniform Requirements
The Boy Scouts of America has always been a uniformed body. The uniform helps to
create a sense of belonging. It symbolizes character development, citizenship training,
and personnel fitness. It also affords the wearer opportunity for recognition of personal
and group accomplishments. Wearing the uniform gives both youth and adult members a
sense of identification with can commitment to the ideals of the worldwide scouting
movement. The uniform is a visible reminder of each member's belief in God, loyalty to
country, and desire to help others. Both youth and adult members should wear their
uniform during all official Cub Scout activities. It was designed as an activity uniform for
both indoor and outdoor scouting adventures.
Pack 284 requires that its Cub Scouts and leaders adhere to the official Boy Scouts of
America uniform requirements for Cub Scouting. This policy as adopted by the pack
committee states that boys' uniform should include the standard BSA-issued shirt with
BSA-issued trousers or dark blue pants. Cut-off shorts or faded or torn blue jeans should
not be worn. Adult leaders shall wear the standard BSA-issued shirt. Specific uniform
parts and prices are at the Scout Shops.

The Cub Scout colors are blue and gold. The blue stands for truth and spirituality,
steadfast loyalty, and the sky above. The gold stands for warm sunlight, good cheer, and
happiness. Together, they symbolize what Cub Scouting is all about.

Rank Advancement
During the Cub Scout Experience every cub scouts advances in Rank each year as long as
they complete all the requirement and are active in the pack. All rank advancement
requirements are new as of 2015 – 2016 scouting year. Please see the handbook for
specific rank requirements and completing the new “adventure system”

Glossary of Cub Scouting Terms
Adventures are requirements for advancement listed in the Wolf Cub Scout Book and Bear Cub Scout
Book. The badges are awarded at pack meetings, but you can recognize your Cub Scouts' progress with the
Immediate Recognition Kit, giving each boy a bead for each three requirements he completes.
The Arrow of Light, the highest award in Cub Scouting, is awarded to a Webelos Scout who completes
additional requirements, including additional activity badges and interaction with a Boy Scout troop
(such as a joint hike).
Most packs have a blue and gold banquet in February (the anniversary month of Boy Scouting) for all
members of the pack and their families.
The Cub Scout sign is used when Cub Scouts say the Cub Scout Promise and Law. The sign is also used
to get the attention of any Cub Scout group. To make the sign, hold up your right hand with the arm
straight and first and middle fingers extended. The other fingers and thumb are folded over into the palm.
A den chief is a Boy Scout who serves as an activities assistant, helping the den leader with the den and
providing fun and interesting things for the boys to do.
Pinewood derby is an activity for all Cub Scouts and Webelos Scouts. Boys build wooden race cars with
adult assistance and race them down a track for prizes and trophies. Other similar activities are the
raingutter regatta (boats) and space derby (spaceships).
The Scout sign is used when Webelos Scouts say the Scout Oath or Promise and Scout Law. To make the
sign, raise the right hand palm forward, upper arm straight, and out to the side. The arm is bent at the
elbow, forming a right angle. The three middle fingers are held erect and the thumb covers the nail of the
little finger.
