American Astronaut Greg Chamitoff was on the International Space Station from May 2008 – Nov 2008. While
there, he started a chess match (Earth vs Space) between 11 members of the Stevenson Elementary School
Chess team from Bellevue (the National K-3 Champs for 2008 and the National K-5 Champs for 2009) and the
earth team. Stevenson picks up to 4 choices per move, then the earth team votes over the internet at
http://uschess.org/nasa2008.
Greg talked to his opponents live via a satellite linkup while in space back in Oct 2008, and met his opponents
face to face at the SuperNational Elementary Chess Championships in Nashville in Apr 2009, and is now making
his first visit to Seattle to visit his opponents and the larger chess community here. The game is still in progress Greg continued the game after he came back to earth – but with all the voting we are only making one move
about every 1-2 weeks. The kids are currently ahead by 2 pawns after 24 moves.

Tour the museum with Greg (everyone).
Chess sets will be available to play informal games in the Side Gallery.
5:00pm to 7:00pm
Museum café is open for dinner.
We will review the Earth vs Space Chess match, talk about the tactics and strategies.

Greg has an audio-visual presentation about his time on the space station.
Question and Answer session about space and chess.
Entry Fee: This covers the museum entrance fee, and the costs of Greg’s visit.
$13.00 per adult if you preregister, $15 at the door.
$8.00 per child under 18 if you preregister, $10 at the door.
