SHORT COURSE ON SMALL ARMS, LIGHT WEAPONS AND SECURITY IN WEST AFRICA
The Abdulsalami Abubakar Institute for Peace and Sustainable Development Studies (AAIPSDS)
Minna, Nigeria in collaboration with the Pan African Strategic and Policy Research Group,
(PANAFSTRAG) invite interested professionals to an innovative, highly intensive and well
packaged, short term course on “Small Arms, Light Weapons and Security in West Africa.”
The course is tailored to provide participants with extensive knowledge and expertise on:
Management of small arms and light weapons, mechanisms for control of illicit trafficking and
proliferation of small arms and light weapons, the legal and administrative mechanisms for the
control of small arms and light weapons in West Africa, and the nexus between insecurity and the
proliferation small arms and light weapons in West Africa.
The objectives of the course are:
(1)
To enhance the understanding of participants on the nexus between conflicts in West
Africa and small arms and light weapon proliferation in the sub-region;
(2)
To provide participants with latest development on control and management of small arms
and light weapons in West Africa
(3)
To provide participants with sound knowledge of international, regional and country legal
and administrative instruments for control of small arms and light weapons
(4)
To provide participants with innovative approaches to project management and
implementation with respect to small arm and light weapon control
The short course is specifically designed to meet the requirements of the following

The training programme will be delivered on a modular basis for a period of six (6) days at the
Abdulsalami Abubakar Institute for Peace and Sustainable Development Studies Minna, Nigeria. It
will be a highly interactive and participatory programme involving practical oriented sessions,
interactive lectures, analysis, mapping and group presentations.
Resource Persons are seasoned and tested Small Arms and Light Weapons scholars,
practitioners, law enforcement agents and lawyers drawn from carefully selected organizations and
agencies.
