Purpose
The Towards Balance mission statement is as follows:
“Our mission is to support and create activities at a household level that will engage the public in the issues of clean
safe water to drink, clean safe food to eat, clean safe air to breathe and a clean safe place to live for all. We define these
as the great issues that will mould the world that we will pass on to our children. As such we see peaceful public
education and engagement as fundamental to our success as a society.”
In order for the agency to achieve this, they have asked our team to collect data (in the form of paper surveys and
video interviews) that pertains to the social, economic and environmental sustainability of the gardens. What is learned
from this can then be used by the Towards Balance Support Network to further empower the local communities in the
Kawartha Lakes region and transform them from handout communities into self-sustaining ones. For instance, if they
see fit a mobile support unit may be created that will teach individuals about nutrition, cooking, meal planning, and
gardening skills.
In addition, knowledge obtained from the project will help develop new partnerships and strengthen existing ones.
This will not only promote success within the Towards Balance organization, but it will also aid the partnering
organizations in growing and becoming more successful themselves. Specific focus will be aimed at local community
kitchens so that food insecurity within the region can be eliminated.
Issue
Deliverables
At the present time there is lack of information on the existing community gardens within the City of Kawartha
Lakes region. This is largely due to the fact that each garden is independently managed and maintained. Although
communication does occur on a small scale between garden members and managers of different garden sites a majority
do not communicate with one another. To take the next step and become a more proactive organization, however, this
communication must be established. This will ultimately allow the needs of those managing and using the gardens need
to be identified, allow the garden network to become a more united, solidified force that can expand further into the
region, and allow gaps in garden knowledge and locations to be recognized.
1. A map which shows the location of each existing community garden in the City of Kawartha Lakes.
2. A summary report of the current state of community gardening in the City of Kawartha Lakes, including the raw
data collected from the administered survey, the results of the survey, and a photo of each garden.
3. Four Literature reviews on garden related topics:
a. Connecting social and environmental sustainability in respect to food production, examining community
gardens specifically
b. Physical aspects of the gardens - soils, ideal container size, watering regimens, etc.
c. Health benefits of community gardens and their food
d. Impact of community gardens on food insecurity in Ontario
A project video three minutes in length interviewing gardeners and footage of community gardens.
Each deliverable will be handed over to our mentor on a jump drive provided by Towards Balance Support Network.
Final written products will be saved in both PDF and MsWord format.
Exclusions
Our group will not actively seek out members of the community or individuals from local organizations for video
interviews, but will instead focus primarily on managers of the garden for this aspect of the project. Furthermore, we will
not be responsible for carrying out responsibilities set out by other organizations as we do not want to stray from our
expected deliverables that were outlined by the Towards Balance Support Network. Lastly, our group will only be
responsible for creating and administering surveys, collecting data (via surveys and interviews), analyzing data,
presenting data (in the form of a map and summary report) and making informed suggestions. All actions involved in
moving forward as an organization will be the responsibility of the Towards Balance Support Network.
Stakeholders
Those who will benefit from our final product include members of the Towards Balance Support Network, members
of the community groups listed below and any community members who are currently part of a community garden or are
interested in becoming part of one. By consulting with the garden manager(s) at each site important information, that
may have been previously unknown or overlooked, can be brought to light. As a result is vital that every manager cooperates by participating in a video interview or by completing a paper survey, otherwise the full scope of the community
garden’s needs and aspirations will not be known.
Our team understands that throughout this process some managers may be sensitive to certain subjects, such as
what their total contribution to the community is or how they feel about working with other organizations included in this
project, however, we will do our best to mitigate these situations if they arise.

Scope
Limitations for this project include:
 $0.40/km driving expenses
 Time constraints - 11 Mondays, 8hrs/day
 Garden managers availability to complete surveys or participate in interviews
Quality standards to be achieved;
 90% grade goal
 Go into all interviews well prepared in order to get good quality results in a timely matter.
 Complete multiple interviews in one day
Success for our team on this project means having the proper data on which to make appropriate decisions. Once
our team knows exactly what we have, then we can determine gaps in Towards Balance’s knowledge and suggest next
steps that the organization should take to aid the community gardens. In terms of the organization’s success this would
mean taking what we find and using it to move the City of Kawartha Lakes towards a healthy and equitable food system
that serves the social, environmental, cultural and economic needs of the community.
