Located in the heart of Adelaide, the North Terrace campus forms part of the city’s cultural promenade surrounded by the state’s art gallery, museum and library. The campus provides a mix of the historical and contemporary, combining old sandstone buildings with state-ofthe-art teaching, learning and research facilities. North Terrace is the main location for undergraduate teaching and a vast range of research activities. Welcome to the School of Economics Here at the School of Economics we are committed to developing graduates that the 21st century demands. The teaching of economics in the University began in 1901, with the first professor appointed in 1929. Today the School enjoys a total student load of about 900 which includes almost 150 at postgraduate level. The School works collegially and offers joint programmes and research with many areas across the University. Teaching and research activity in the School is supported by 23 academics. In addition to this each year the school employs a small number of visiting academics mostly from North American and European universities. You’ll be joining a team that is strongly research orientated. In the recent Excellence in Research for Australia report the School received 4 out of 5 in the fields of Economics and Applied Economics indicating research performance that is “above world standard.” On the teaching front we are delighted to be pioneering one of the small number of Advanced degrees across the University with our newly launched Bachelor of Economics (Advanced) programme. Ability to promote the interests of the School and the discipline of economics in the wider University community, and the professional community, nationally and international. 6. A doctorate in Economics responsibilities in relation to occupational health and safety be accountable for the implementation of all aspects of hazard management, design of work, training, workplace inspection and reporting within the School. Occupational Health and Safety Regulations are met Information for Candidates 9 Conditions of employment Appointment – duration of contract Remuneration Package Relocation Costs This is a continuing position. The successful candidate will also be appointed as Head of School for a fixed period of three years with the option of an extension for a further two years subject to the University’s procedures for the appointment of Heads of Schools. A Headship loading is available to the successful candidate. An attractive and flexible remuneration package will be determined by the Executive Dean following negotiation with the successful applicant. The University will reimburse the cost of airfares for the successful applicant and his/her family. Additionally, the University will cover reasonable costs of removal/ relocation of household items and personal effects. Other financial assistance may be negotiated. Superannuation The appointee may become a member of UniSuper (the national superannuation fund for Australian universities) with a generous employer contribution of 17%. Alternative superannuation arrangements may be negotiated if appropriate. Adelaide is a great city for cyclists, with many good bicycle paths available. Commuting to university by bicycle (bike) requires a streetlegal bicycle, a helmet and a good bike lock. There are lots of places to park and lock your bike on campus. Lifestyle South Australian’s enjoy a relaxed lifestyle, in a safe and clean environment. Adelaide’s lifestyle is driven to a large degree by a vibrant food and wine culture. The city’s diverse cultural mix ensures a wide range of restaurants and cafes with sensational food at affordable prices. South Australia is also proud to be Australia’s wine capital, with popular wine regions within a one hour drive of the city. The moderate weather is a major contributor to Adelaide’s easygoing way of life. Average winter temperatures are 16 degrees celsius, with Summer averages 28 degrees. Hot days can easily reach 40 degrees. Living in Adelaide is affordable, with the cost of travel, eating out, and renting or buying a house considerably lower than other Australian cities. Accommodation There are many levels of accommodation available in Adelaide, depending on your needs and budget, but generally it is affordable compared with other cities. As with most cities, accommodation close to the city centre is the most expensive and generally decreases in price towards the outer suburbs. >> The median house price is around $392,100. >> The median rental price is $300 per week, for a three-bedroom house in Adelaide’s middle suburbs. Getting Around Adelaide is easy to get around, and has been described as a ‘20 minute city’ with everything within easy reach. The airport is only seven kilometres from the CBD, and the Adelaide Hills and major beaches are less than 30 minutes away by car, making the city easy to get around compared with other Australian cities. Most people in Adelaide drive cars, for which you need a driver’s licence.
