About the University
of Adelaide
Established in 1874, the University of Adelaide
is Australia’s third oldest university.
There are four main campuses in South
Australia located at North Terrace, Adelaide;
Roseworthy; Thebarton and Waite. The
primary campus is centrally located on the
city’s cultural boulevard, North Terrace, in
the heart of Adelaide. The University’s five
faculties are based at the North Terrace campus.

Research

The Head of School position will be based
at North Terrace campus.
Located in the heart of Adelaide, the North
Terrace campus forms part of the city’s
cultural promenade surrounded by the
state’s art gallery, museum and library.
The campus provides a mix of the
historical and contemporary, combining
old sandstone buildings with state-ofthe-art teaching, learning and research
facilities.
North Terrace is the main location for
undergraduate teaching and a vast range
of research activities.
Welcome to the
School of Economics
Here at the School of Economics we are committed to developing
graduates that the 21st century demands.
The teaching of economics in the University began in 1901, with
the first professor appointed in 1929. Today the School enjoys
a total student load of about 900 which includes almost 150 at
postgraduate level. The School works collegially and offers joint
programmes and research with many areas across the University.
Teaching and research activity in the School is supported by 23
academics. In addition to this each year the school employs a small
number of visiting academics mostly from North American and
European universities.
You’ll be joining a team that is strongly research orientated. In
the recent Excellence in Research for Australia report the School
received 4 out of 5 in the fields of Economics and Applied Economics
indicating research performance that is “above world standard.”
On the teaching front we are delighted to be pioneering one of the
small number of Advanced degrees across the University with our
newly launched Bachelor of Economics (Advanced) programme.
This is a new tier of programme designed to target the best and the
brightest. We also teach a number of Masters programmes aimed to
complement our other market offerings.

his ten year strategic plan that lays the foundations for enhanced
student experience which includes a new teaching and learning
paradigm which is embedded in the School of Economics.

Professor
As Professor, you will play a leading role
in research and teaching at the School of
Economics. The School is strongly researchorientated and your role in this will be key.
The School also has a large undergraduate
programme teaching into a number of
degrees (including economics, commerce,
finance and arts, and an expanding graduate
programme. Applicants from a range of fields
of economics are encouraged to apply.
Head of School
As Head of School, you will play a key
role in representing the School within the
Faculty, the University and with key external
stakeholders. The Head is also responsible
for staff development and management, and
for financial and infrastructure management.
You will have the capacity to provide strong,
cohesive leadership in the core responsibilities
of education and research in the discipline
of Economics. A successful track record in

of School shall include:

>> Produce an integrated strategic plan

academic standards for implementing the
teaching programs
including maintenance of appropriate
standards and processes for higher
degree supervision
>> Develop a structure to oversee co-
ordination and collaboration in teaching

postgraduate curriculum
>> Further develop a program of visiting
lectures and collaborative research
projects with relevant national and
international institutions
>> Provide leadership in the research activities
of the School and develop the output of
staff in research
Staff Development and Management
>> Develop a staffing plan to facilitate the
availability of suitably qualified staff to meet
the School needs
>> Monitor the performance of staff and
provide assistance to those whose
performance is assessed as requiring
improvement
>> Implement a systematic career
development review program and provide
structures for career guidance and
mentoring for early career academics
>> Deliver responsive quality assurance
processes and outcomes that promote a

resources including the optimal use of

University and Faculty business systems
>> Identify and pursue opportunities to
generate income from School activities,
including contract research, consultancy,
commercialisation of Intellectual Property,
and attraction of fee-paying students
>> Develop partnerships with national and
international organisations, government
and the commercial sector whereby
income from sources independent of the
University can be generated
Essential minimum criteria
1. A record of excellence in teaching
economics and curriculum development at
both undergraduate and graduate levels.
2. An outstanding research record in one or
more areas of economics with appropriate
international recognition (demonstrated
through high quality publications in top
international journals).
3. An ability to undertake the role of Head
with respect to the strategic and operational
planning, academic leadership, staff
development and management and finance
and infrastructure management.
4. Excellent communication and
interpersonal skills.
5. Ability to promote the interests of the
School and the discipline of economics in
the wider University community, and the
professional community, nationally and
international.
6. A doctorate in Economics
responsibilities in relation to occupational
health and safety be accountable for the
implementation of all aspects of hazard
management, design of work, training,
workplace inspection and reporting within
the School. Ensure statutory obligations as
outlined in the S.A. Occupational Health
and Safety Regulations are met

Appointment – duration of contract
Remuneration Package
Relocation Costs
This is a continuing position. The
successful candidate will also be
appointed as Head of School for a fixed
period of three years with the option
of an extension for a further two years
subject to the University’s procedures for
the appointment of Heads of Schools.
A Headship loading is available to the
successful candidate.
An attractive and flexible remuneration
package will be determined by the
Executive Dean following negotiation with
the successful applicant.
The University will reimburse the cost of
airfares for the successful applicant and
his/her family. Additionally, the University
will cover reasonable costs of removal/
relocation of household items and personal
effects. Other financial assistance may
be negotiated.
Superannuation
The appointee may become a member
of UniSuper (the national superannuation
fund for Australian universities) with a
generous employer contribution of 17%.
Alternative superannuation arrangements
may be negotiated if appropriate.

Adelaide has an efficient public transport
system, including buses, trains and trams.
Adelaide is a great city for cyclists, with many
good bicycle paths available. Commuting to
university by bicycle (bike) requires a streetlegal bicycle, a helmet and a good bike lock.
There are lots of places to park and lock your
bike on campus.
Lifestyle
South Australian’s enjoy a relaxed lifestyle, in
a safe and clean environment.
Adelaide’s lifestyle is driven to a large degree
by a vibrant food and wine culture. The city’s
diverse cultural mix ensures a wide range of
restaurants and cafes with sensational food
at affordable prices. South Australia is also
proud to be Australia’s wine capital, with
popular wine regions within a one hour drive
of the city.
The moderate weather is a major contributor
to Adelaide’s easygoing way of life. Average
winter temperatures are 16 degrees celsius,
with Summer averages 28 degrees. Hot
days can easily reach 40 degrees.
Living in Adelaide is affordable, with the cost
of travel, eating out, and renting or buying
a house considerably lower than other
Australian cities.
Accommodation
There are many levels of accommodation
available in Adelaide, depending on your
needs and budget, but generally it is
affordable compared with other cities. As
with most cities, accommodation close to
the city centre is the most expensive and
generally decreases in price towards the
outer suburbs.
>> The median house price is around
$392,100.
>> The median rental price is $300 per week,
for a three-bedroom house in Adelaide’s
middle suburbs.
Getting Around
Adelaide is easy to get around, and has
been described as a ‘20 minute city’ with
everything within easy reach. The airport is
only seven kilometres from the CBD, and the
Adelaide Hills and major beaches are less
than 30 minutes away by car, making the
city easy to get around compared with other
Australian cities.
Most people in Adelaide drive cars, for which
you need a driver’s licence. Traffic is relatively
free-flowing and while ‘peak hour’ traffic is
busy, it pales in comparison to other large
cities. ‘Early bird’ parking in the city costs
about $13 per day.

prides itself on art and culture, with Adelaide
hosting 400 annual festivals and events.

Campus Life
Being based on campus at the University
of Adelaide ensures a vibrant workplace
environment.
Each campus offers many services and
facilities, including libraries, cafes, banks,
Post Office and more. There are often events
held on campus, from lunchtime music
events or BBQs, through to free public
lectures. Staff can also get involved with
the various recreational activities through the
Sports Association and are welcome to join
the Staff Club.
