Minutes
The minutes of a meeting of the Board held on 1 March 2017, previously circulated, were
confirmed.
2.
Intimations from Senate
The Board noted that the Senate, 29 March 2017, had received the minutes of a meeting of the
Board held on 1 March 2017 and had approved all the recommendations contained therein.
3.
Matters still to be finalised
The Board noted that the following matters previously considered by the Board were still to be
finalised:
a) Proposals to introduce three new qualifications to replace the current Bachelor of Physical
Education (Bachelor of Physical Education, Bachelor of Science majoring in Exercise and
Sport Science, and the Bachelor of Sport Development) (November 2016).
b) Proposal to introduce a Bachelor of Health Sciences with four major subjects (Community
Health Care, Māori Health, Pacific and Global Health and Public Health) (November 2016)
(see Item 9, HSC-1).
c) Proposal to introduce a new major subject, Materials Science and Technology (MAST) for the
Bachelor of Science (BSc), the Bachelor of Applied Science (BAppSc) and the Bachelor of Arts
and Science (BASc), and to introduce a new minor subject, Materials Science and Technology
(February 2017).

To introduce a new paper ENGL 320 Advanced Creative Writing, subject to clarifying
the Semester occurrence, and noting the Board indicated the statement regarding

Media Film and Communication
To introduce a new paper, MFCO 210 Theory of Film and Media, subject to providing
justification for adding the new 300-level regulations for the major subject, and
ensuring the non-contact hours for the essay match up in the Assessment Procedures.

Philosophy
To introduce a new paper PHIL 106 Radical Philosophy, noting that the paper will take
place in Semester 1.
To introduce a new paper PHIL 240/330 Epistemology: The Theory of Knowledge,
noting that the paper will take place in Semester 2 and subject to ensuring the multilevel versions are restricted against each other, and to delete PHIL 102.
To introduce a new paper PHIL 229/329 Bertrand Russell: Ethics, Logic, Pacifism and
Truth, and to delete PHIL 221/331.
Sociology Gender and Social Work
To amend the regulations for the Criminology minor.
To introduce a new paper GEND 311 Interventions in Sexual Violence, and to retain
GEND 334 Special Topic.
To amend the regulations for the Gender Studies and Sociology major subjects.
Te Tumu – School of Māori, Pacific and Indigenous Studies
To introduce a new paper, MAOR 205/MAOR 305 Ngā Pūkenga Tuhi subject to
confirmation of new paper codes (to be advised).
Theology and Religion
To amend the teaching period and teaching mode of RELS 220/320 to offer the papers
in Summer School and add distance teaching mode, subject to revising the non-contact
hours for the new distance taught version of the paper.

Economics
To introduce Philosophy, Politics and Economics (“PPE”) for the Bachelor of Commerce
(endorsed by the Division of Humanities).
Management
To add BSNS 111 to the 100-level major subject requirements for two disciplines
within the Bachelor of Commerce (Management and Human Resource Management).

Tourism
To introduce a new Bachelor of Arts major subject, “Tourism, Languages and Cultures”
(endorsed by the Division of Humanities) subject to editorial amendments and
reviewing the development of a 300-level capstone paper following the first year of
introduction of the programme.
DIVISION OF HEALTH SCIENCES

New Programmes, Amendment to Regulations and Schedules, New papers
The Board
RECOMMENDED
**CUAP**
that the following proposal from the Division of Health Sciences, 16 March 2017, be
approved:
To introduce a new undergraduate qualification, the Bachelor of Health Sciences
(BHealSc), with four major subjects: Community Health Care (CMHC), Māori Health
(MAOH), Pacific & Global Health (PAGH), and Public Health (PUBH), subject to
reconsidering the level of assessment required in the new papers, taking measures to
ensure there is no confusion for students enrolling in the Health Science First Year
programme, and adding a Graduate Profile for the Exit Pathway.
Medical Laboratory Science
To amend the regulations governing special examinations for the Bachelor of Medical
Laboratory Science (BMLSc).
Radiation Therapy
To amend the regulations for the Bachelor of Radiation Therapy (BRT) to add a minor
addition to the Structure wording and to add a Duration clause.

approved by the Deputy Vice-chancellor (Academic) on behalf of the Board for the 2017 year and

to record its appreciation of the work of the Manager, Academic Committees and Academic
Committees’ Administrator in setting up the system for the electronic distribution of agendas
and documents for meetings.
Date of Next Meeting
The Board noted that the next meeting of the Board was scheduled for Wednesday 3 May 2017,
2:00pm in Committee Room North, on the first floor of the Clocktower, and that venue changes
are required for the following 2017 meetings to date: June (TBC), July (Council Chamber) and
November (Council Chamber).
