PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION (page 1):
This property is located in the village of Hamorton, in the northeast part of Kennett Township. The 0.61-acre
property is mostly flat and drains to the south; it is lightly wooded. Baltimore Pike, which forms the north
property boundary, is slightly elevated in this location. The south and east parts of the property are paved for
parking. A historic brick building (a former store and post office) near the intersection of Baltimore Pike and
Kennett Pike has several frame additions. The building is a contributing resource in the Hamorton HD.
The former Bratton Store building is comprised of six sections. The core is a 2-story, 3-bay Federal style
brick section nearest the intersection; it has a 2-story rear addition. The other sections are frame. Key
features of the house include its massing, fenestration, and small chimneys.
1. Brick core: the 3-story, 2-bay section facing north onto Baltimore Pike.
a. Roof: end-gabled, clad with asphalt shingles. A small brick chimney is located near the east
end of the ridge. The eaves and bargeboards are molded, with small returns on the end walls.
b. Walls: brick, laid in running bond (no headers). Fenestration is symmetrical; windows are 6x6
units with louvered shutters on the second floor. All windows on this section have slightly
protruding sills.
i. North elevation: three bays. The second floor has windows in the outer bays. The first
floor has a centered door with a fluted frame and Greek Revival style bull’s eyes in the
upper corners; the door also features door shutters and a 3-light transom. “Ghost”
markings on the brick walls indicate the presence of a former hipped roof porch.
ii. West elevation: windows on three levels. The attic level has two small 6x6 windows.
The second floor has two symmetrically spaced windows. On the first floor, the house
features a 6x6 window with louvered shutters, a 6-panel door opening under a 3-light
transom, and an enlarged 6x6 window.
iii. East elevation: mostly obscured by the end addition; it is partially stuccoed and
features a small 6x6 window south of the chimney.
c. Foundation: brick
2. Brick addition: the 2-story, 3-bay section extending the core to the south; the section faces west onto
Kennett Pike.
a. Roof: gabled (cross-gabled to the core) is clad with asphalt shingles and features a molded
cornice. A small painted brick chimney is located near the south end of the ridge.
b. Walls: brick, laid in running bond. Fenestration is symmetrical. Windows are 6x6 double
hung sash units with louvered shutters. The main (west) elevation has two windows on the
first and second floors. The door located in the center bay has an entablature-like lintel. The
south elevation features an arched headed attic window with undersized louvered shutters and
two 6x6 windows on the second floor.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION (page 2):
3. Rear addition: the 2-story, 3-bay frame section on the east end of the brick addition. It features a
gabled roof clad with asphalt shingles and frame walls clad with aluminum. Fenestration is
symmetrical. The south elevation has three 6x6 windows on the second floor; the first floor is mostly
obscured by additions. The east elevation has an arched headed attic window, a second floor door
near the northeast corner leading onto a frame set of stairs down to grade, and a first floor window
under the stairs.
4. End addition: a 2-story frame section on the east end of the core and the north elevation of the rear
addition. It has a nearly flat roof featuring a thick molded cornice and aluminum eaves. The walls are
also aluminum. Fenestration is asymmetrical. Windows are mostly 6x6 units of varying sizes. The
north elevation has three windows on the second floor (the west window is a narrow 4x4 unit) and
two windows on the first floor (the west window is a quite small unit but still 6x6). The east elevation
has two 6x6 windows with louvered shutters.
5. 1-story addition: a small addition on the north elevation of the rear addition and the east wall of the
end addition. The shed roof is clad with asphalt shingles, and the walls are aluminum. The north
elevation has a French door with nine inset lights east of a small 6x6 window. The east elevation has
a centered 6x6 window with louvered shutters.
6. Rear shed addition: a 1-story, 5-bay section extending across the south elevation of the building
complex. It has a shed roof clad with asphalt shingles. The walls are clad with aluminum siding. A
door is located in the center bay of the south elevation, opening under a gabled hood. Two 6x6
windows are located on either side of the door. The east end has another gabled entrance facing onto
the parking lot. The foundation is concrete.
