Kennett Township
Marshall, Abner House
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION (page 1):
This property is located in the east central part of Kennett Township. The 3.8-acre parcel of land is
moderately wooded and faces northeast onto Kennett Pike. A long drive leads southwest from the
road; a short loop leads northwest to the farmhouse, while the main part of the drive continues
southwest to the barn. The property drains to the south. The house may be eligible for the National
Register for its intact and significant architecture (Class 2A).
The farmhouse is located at the end of the short loop. It is a mid-19th century farmhouse facing
generally east. The architecture of the house is a mixture of the Federal style and the Italianate
style. The 2-story, 3-bay building has the following key features: decorative brackets, floor to ceiling
windows on the first floor, decorative wing walls, and a formal terrace on the main elevation facing
onto the loop. The house has a rear ell section aligned with the south end wall of the core.
1. Core: the 2-story, 3-bay section facing roughly east.
a. Roof: end-gabled, clad with slate. The south end of the ridge has stucco-overbrick (corbelled) chimneys paired across the ridge; the north end has a stuccoed,
banded chimney centered on the ridge. The chimneys are located inside the
building envelope, not flush with the outer walls. The overhanging boxed eaves
are supported by thick jigsaw brackets on the side walls and on the end walls.
b. Walls: painted brick. Fenestration is symmetrical on the main elevation but not on
the end walls. Windows vary in size and type; most windows have the appropriate
shutters (louvered on the second floor and paneled on the first).
i. Main (east) elevation has three bays. The second floor has three double
hung sash windows with an unusual 8x8 configuration (the sashes are
divided vertically by heavier muntins, with thinner muntins further dividing
the sashes into eight panes). Windows have lip lintels and sills. The first
floor has a centered entrance flanked by floor-to-ceiling windows. Wing
walls reach outward from the corners of this elevation; they are brick
elements with an ovolo-shaped top and recessed niches in the center.
1. The entrance is a Colonial Revival style, formal entrance dating to
the early 20th century. The actual door consists of two leaves, with
each leaf featuring a large arched headed panel over a smaller
rectangular raised panel. Over the door is a full-length transom with
diamond shaped window panes. Unfluted round pilasters flank the
door; they feature a small base and capital. The pilasters support an
entablature decorated with six Doric style triglyphs under a row of
dentils.
2. The large floor-to-ceiling windows flanking the door have a fixed
upper sash with four lights and a moveable lower sash with six large
lights. Each window is flanked by 4-paneled shutters.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION (page 2):
ii. North elevation: windows on three levels. Attic level has two arched
headed 4x4 windows. The second floor has two 6x6 windows with louvered
shutters.
iii. South elevation: end wall facing the property drive. Attic level has a
centered arched headed, 4x4 window. The second floor has a window/door
opening onto the balcony over an addition. This window/unit consists of a
9x9 window in the shape of a door, opening under a 3-light transom and
flanked by 4-paneled shutters. East of the window/door is a smaller 6x6
window with shutters.
c. Foundation: stone
2. South addition: a 1-story section on the south elevation of the core and rear ell with a
balcony on the second floor. The balcony is outlined by an iron railing. The section’s
walls are stuccoed, with large multi-light window units on the south elevation. A terrace
south of the section is outlined by a low brick wall.
3. Rear ell: the 2-story, 1-bay section on the rear of the core and aligned with its south end
wall. It has a slightly lower ridge than the core. The roof is clad with slate and features
similar brackets to those found on the core. The painted brick walls feature similar
windows to those on the core. The south elevation has a 6x6 window centered on the
south elevation with louvered shutters.
The barn is located at the west end of the property drive. It is a partially rebuilt barn on a
historic foundation.
1. Roof: gentle slope with widely overhanging eaves.
2. Walls: frame, clad with clapboards. Fenestration is symmetrical, though it varies by
elevation.
a. Main (south) elevation has a centered tripartite 6x6 window with louvered
shutters. A pent roof with a hipped profile demarcates the boundary between the
first and second floors.
b. The east elevation is the gable end wall facing the drive. It has a semi-circular
window in the peak of the gable, located over a 6x6 double hung sash window
with 3-paneled shutters.
c. The north elevation is the location of the gabled bridge. Two stone walls retain the
ramp at the north end of the bridge.
3. Foundation: stone, partially stuccoed. Fenestration is all replacement.
a. South elevation: centered opening under the pent with two wide bays.
b. East elevation: a formal entrance is centered, featuring an entablature over the
door. Flanking the door are sets of paired 4-light windows.
