Several people from local AA groups yearned to create a
conference that was “of the people, by the people, and for
the people.” To look for support from groups, they
attended a central office representative meeting in August
of 1987. They then realized that receiving backing from a
legitimate, recognizable entity like the central office could
only help strengthen their hopes of starting the conference
they imagined, and in turn, asked for support from the
central office. Thus, the office was voted to sponsor the
conference.
The first conference was proven successful, and
most of the money was donated back to the central office.
As the years passed, the structure of the conference
committee changed, but one thing has remained, as our
Statement of Purpose reads:
Our Primary Purpose is to carry the
message of Alcoholics Anonymous to
other alcoholics and to financially
support the Intergroup Offices of the TriCounty area.

WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY?
29th Annual
TRI-COUNTY CONFERENCE
Conferences and conventions are not AA meetings.
They are Special Events—an opportunity to share the
AA experience in a broader way.
They require months of preparation and money.
Special Events are often held in hotels and convention
centers. There are charges for use of the facility, coffee,
etc. Other expenses include travel and lodging for
speakers, as well as printing of flyers, schedules,
postage and supplies.
The cost of these Special Events are paid for through
a nominal registration fee. Attendance is voluntary. As
responsible AA members, we “Pay our own way.”
