All of our Kindergarten programs are literacy-rich, play-based, and staffed by dedicated early childhood teachers and qualified educational assistants (EA). In addition, all of our early learners have access to a team of speech and language pathologists, occupational therapists, and additional consultants and specialists. Using a collaborative approach, EIPS is continually www.alhorton.ca 3 A.L. HORTON ELEMENTARY Highlights M a y 7 , 2 0 1 5 looking for ways to enhance outcomes for all learners. learning Recently, EIPS launched an innovative pilot program for Kindergarten students called: Investigating Transitions to Grade 1: 20142015 Kindergarten Pilot Project. The program runs from April to June this school year and is designed to help students, needing extra support, prepare for Grade 1. The program varies from school to school offering a range of supports including: additional teaching, extra EA time, small-group work, individualized programming, increased kindergarten hours, and added parent groups. The goal is to ensure all EIPS students have a successful transition into Grade 1. Each school will learn from these pilots and we look forward to sharing our discoveries in the 2015-2016 school year. Stay tuned! HORTON ELEMENTARY Highlights M a y 7 , 2 0 1 5 COMMUNICATING STUDENT LEARNING: update for pilot schools A.L. Horton Elementary School is pleased to announce it will be piloting Elk Island Public Schools’ (EIPS) new elementary report cards in the 2015-2016 school year. Developed by EIPS, the report cards are designed to enrich achievement for students in grades 1 to 6 and enhance the quality of education within EIPS by building strong partnerships among students, teachers, and parents. Last year, EIPS established a Communicating Student Learning committee, made up of parents, teachers, administrators, trustees, and central office staff. Using feedback from close to 1,000 parents and 400 principals and teachers, the committee has produced an innovative reporting system focused on student achievement in academic outcomes and learner attributes. Teachers will continue to assess all areas of the current programs of studies. What will change is the way in which student learning is reported. Using a five-point numeric scoring scale, teachers will indicate student achievement in clear, parent-friendly categories in each subject. The current EPAL scale will no longer be used. Additionally, the reports card will also allow teachers to report personalized information about each student in relation to learner attributes, areas of strength, areas for growth, and next steps. EIPS is excited about its new method of communicating student learning, it’s innovative, inclusive, and based on what stakeholders have indicated they want to see in a reporting system. The pilot will take place in 10 other EIPS elementary schools. The full implementation of the report cards will take place in 2016-2017 school year. www.alhorton.ca 5 A.L.
