our belief to be lifelong learners, students
must have ingenuity, creativity, critical
thinking skills, and citizenship skills. To
achieve this, we work hard to ensure our
students hone a broad range of learning
experiences that go beyond the basic subjects
of math, language arts, science, and social
studies.
Over the course of the week, schools
throughout EIPS will be showcasing the
outstanding initiatives taking place geared
towards creating lifelong learners. Within our
school, we will be celebrating Education Week
with the following activities: used book sale
cookie sale, hats off to mental health, float
sale, kite flying, career day, and spring time
raffle.
We encourage all of you to participate and
help us celebrate Education Week at
A.L. Horton Elementary School.

EDUCATION WEEK: MAY 4-8, 2015
During the week of May 4-8, schools
throughout Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS)
will be taking part in Education Week to
showcase and celebrate the important role
education plays in shaping the future of our
province. Led by the Alberta Teachers'
Association, the Alberta Schools Boards

Today, more than ever, EIPS, A.L. Horton,

students with optimal learning conditions. It’s
INVESTIGATING
TRANSITIONS
TO
GRADE 1: 2014-2015 KINDERGARTEN
PILOT PORJECT
Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) is committed
to providing its students with an excellent
start to learning. All of our Kindergarten
programs are literacy-rich, play-based, and
staffed by dedicated early childhood teachers
and qualified educational assistants (EA). In
addition, all of our early learners have access
to a team of speech and language
pathologists, occupational therapists, and
additional consultants and specialists. Using a
collaborative approach, EIPS is continually

looking for ways to enhance
outcomes for all learners.
learning
Recently, EIPS launched an innovative pilot
program for Kindergarten students called:
Investigating Transitions to Grade 1: 20142015 Kindergarten Pilot Project. The program
runs from April to June this school year and is
designed to help students, needing extra
support, prepare for Grade 1. The program
varies from school to school offering a range
of supports including: additional teaching,
extra
EA
time,
small-group
work,
individualized
programming,
increased
kindergarten hours, and added parent groups.
The goal is to ensure all EIPS students have a
successful transition into Grade 1. Each school
will learn from these pilots and we look
forward to sharing our discoveries in the
2015-2016 school year. Stay tuned!
DRIVER APPRECIATION DAY:
4, 2015
MAY
May 4 is Driver Appreciation Day. Join us as
we recognize and thank our school bus drivers
for keeping the safety of our students their
first priority. We encourage you, and your
children, to take a moment on May 4 to
express thanks to our dedicated drivers who
often go above and beyond the call of duty to
provide safe and timely transportation to our
students. This can be as simple as a smile and
"thank you" or offering a personalized card
when getting on, or off, the bus.
On behalf of A.L. Horton Elementary School,
THANK YOU to our school bus drivers for a
job well done.

COMMUNICATING
STUDENT
LEARNING: update for pilot schools
A.L. Horton Elementary School is pleased to
announce it will be piloting Elk Island Public
Schools’ (EIPS) new elementary report cards
in the 2015-2016 school year. Developed by
EIPS, the report cards are designed to enrich
achievement for students in grades 1 to 6 and
enhance the quality of education within EIPS
by building strong partnerships among
students, teachers, and parents.
Last year, EIPS established a Communicating
Student Learning committee, made up of
parents, teachers, administrators, trustees,
and central office staff. Using feedback from
close to 1,000 parents and 400 principals and
teachers, the committee has produced an
innovative reporting system focused on
student achievement in academic outcomes
and learner attributes.
Teachers will continue to assess all areas of
the current programs of studies. What will
change is the way in which student learning is
reported. Using a five-point numeric scoring
scale,
teachers
will
indicate
student
achievement
in
clear,
parent-friendly
categories in each subject. The current EPAL
scale will no longer be used. Additionally, the
reports card will also allow teachers to report
personalized information about each student
in relation to learner attributes, areas of
strength, areas for growth, and next steps.
EIPS is excited about its new method of
communicating
student
learning,
it’s
innovative, inclusive, and based on what
stakeholders have indicated they want to see
in a reporting system. The pilot will take place
in 10 other EIPS elementary schools. The full
implementation of the report cards will take
place in 2016-2017 school year.
